Assignment 3 - Disaster Aid

Our Disaster Aid Design Team Planning Document

PLAN phase of engineering design

(Turn in one doc per team by Fri. Dec 20th)

Teammate Names:

DQ: How can we provide support for disaster survivors?

Part 1: Our Design Statement:

We plan to build (describe system of cargo and packaging)...

for (whom?)....

In the space below, describe the specifics of your design goal, including any imagined details about the survivor you are designing for as well as the design criteria and constraints that you are working with.

  1. Who is the very specific person you are building for? What do you know about this person’s needs? Feelings? Experience? Location? Resources? What does he/she look like?
  2. What is  the most important thing that you would like to deliver to this person?  Which problem do we think we could help solve for this person?
  3. How will this delivery make a difference for the person?
  4. What are the criteria and constraints of this project?

Part 2:  Design Sketches  (Hard-copy delivery to teacher)

Attach one 8.5” x 11” hand-drawn sketch each of your designs for the supply cargo and for the delivery system/packaging.  You will need to submit two complete sketches per team. One sketch will be for the cargo and one for the packaging.  include all key labels to identify the key features in the systems.  (LABELS, LABELS, LABELS!)

Part 3: Materials List:  For each system (supply cargo and delivery system/packaging), make a complete list of all materials needed to build a prototype of your systems.

Materials Needed

Supply Cargo System:

  1. What do we need to learn to solve this problem?
  2. What materials & tools are required for our supplies design?
  3. Do we have the skills and materials?
  4. What might be the  least expensive materials we can use?
  5. How might we use the most durable materials?

Packaging System

  1. What do we need to learn to solve this problem?
  2. What materials & tools are required for our design?
  3. Do we have the skills and materials?
  4. What might be the  least expensive materials we can use?
  5. How might we use the most durable materials?
  6. How might we protect the delivery best?
