UPDATE FEED:

May 24, 2018

Early this morning, the Fremont Unified School Board voted to bring back 6th grade sex ed for the 2017-2018 school year. Before they head out for summer vacation, 6th graders in Fremont will get quality, inclusive sex ed that covers topics like STI prevention, boundaries, and how to think critically about gender stereotypes. This is vital information at a time when STI rates in California are at record highs, nearly 12% of California teens experience dating violence, and 61% of Fremont 7th graders have heard slurs and negative comments about gender and sex.

We’re immensely grateful for the leadership of Trustees Berke and Crosbie for bringing this motion to the floor and for Trustee Campbell and new Student Board Member Pallas Chou for standing up for the rights of Fremont students to get quality, inclusive sex education.

6th grade sex ed classes will start in the coming weeks. According to staff during last night’s meeting, if parents already submitted an opt-out request to the district, those requests will still apply and parents will have an opportunity to continue opting out up until instruction begins.

But our work isn’t done! We’re looking forward to the 2018-2019 school year and the sex ed curriculum task force the district is setting up. If you’d like to stay involved with our fight, subscribe for email updates or follow us on Facebook.
