The Virginia Student Power Network (VSPN), founded in 2013, is a coalition of young people organizing for more accessible, affordable, democratic, and diverse higher education in the Commonwealth, as well as social and racial justice on our campuses and in our communities. We’ve campaigned and won victories fighting for accessible higher education, for transparency in university governance, against white supremacy on our campuses, and more. Virginia Student Power Network Statewide Campus Organizer

POSITION-TYPE:

Part-time (30 hrs/week), stipended, six-month-long position with benefits

LOCATION:

Anywhere in Virginia, but preference for Richmond, Northern Virginia, or the Hampton Roads area.

DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES:

VSPN is looking to hire a recent graduate or emerging organizer to help do serious grassroots organizing with young people/college students in Virginia, to take our organizing to the next level.

This is a part-time stipended position requiring 30 hours of work per week. You may be based anywhere in Virginia, but there’s preference for Richmond, Northern Virginia, or the Hampton Roads area. Regardless, regular travel in the state is required, including on some weekends.

This organizer will have a key role in running our first-ever statewide VSPN Student Organizing Fellowship in the summer and fall of 2018, including organizing the trainings and logistics for statewide fellowship trainings on weekends throughout the summer.

You will build relationships with our paid fellows and other VSPN student leaders, work intensely with them one-on-one, mentor them to create plans for building and mobilizing a base on their campus to execute a campaign, and create a cohesive, supportive environment amongst the group.

In the fall semester, you will support VSPN chapters at campuses around the state to build or grow their base of involved students, launch or grow the issues campaigns they’re fighting for on their campus, continue to mentor the VSPN Student Organizing Fellows, help organize more large statewide convenings, and spend at least 20% of your time helping run VSPN’s Civic Engagement Program (voter registration, get-out-the-vote, and other efforts) in the lead-up to the November 2018 elections.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Recent graduate or emerging organizer with experience organizing for social justice on the campus or community level.
• Clear and unwavering commitment to values of social justice, racial justice, and collective liberation.
• An ability to think on your feet, juggle competing priorities, hustle, and compassionately work through complex interpersonal matters.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• The ability to attend most if not all of the VSPN Student Organizing Fellowship training weekends and key mobilizations: June 16-17, July 7-8, July 28-19, August 11-12, and August 18-19.
• A valid driver’s license and access to a working vehicle, for regular required travel around Virginia.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

If hired, you will be a part-time employee of our partner organization, New Virginia Majority, subject to their human resources policies. This is a six-month-long position of 30 hrs/week. Compensation is a monthly pre-tax stipend of $2,000. The position comes with an excellent benefits package, including health, vision, dental, and stipends for phone and transportation.
