Dear Oskaloosa Elementary School Parents and Guardians,

You may have heard the BUZZ about ‘OSKY PRIDE’ AND PBIS!

Positive Behavior Intervention Supports is a program supported by Oskaloosa Elementary School to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. It is a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social and learning goals. We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel in their learning. At OES, we focus on the pillars of being RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE, AND CARING.

As part of the PBIS program, we have established several clear expectations for the desired behaviors in all areas of our school. We will explicitly teach those expectations to the students and reward them frequently with positive notes, Osky Pride tickets, and prizes for their great behavior. The expectations for all student behavior will be clear throughout our building and playground areas, cafeteria, gymnasium, and classrooms. You will be able to ask your student, “What are the expectations in your school?” “How do you follow those expectations?” “What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules/expectations?

These expectations will specifically address bullying behaviors, provide for a safe school environment and give more time for instruction. We will apply consistent consequences and positive reinforcement for all kids. By detailing every expected behavior and teaching to kids in a positive way, we will provide a common language for everyone in our building, including students, teachers, front office staff, lunchroom staff, bus drivers, custodians, and our paraprofessionals.

We believe that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community where all students have an environment where they can learn, succeed and grow.

We would like your input and your involvement. We are sending a matrix for you to implement at home with your child, and it is also available on our school website.   Notice the matrix focuses on the same pillars that we use at school. We have included a sample family matrix, and blank matrix to create as a family.  We appreciate your support in implementing this matrix at home.   By following these expectations at home and school, we believe our students will excel.  The matrix will come home twice this school year, at both conference times.  Please contact us at school if you have any questions or need further information.  Thank you for your support!
