Shenandoah Marlins Aquatic Club Pre-Employment Screening Policy

PURPOSE -

SMAC is responsible for hiring and supervising our own coaches and staff, and managing our volunteer coaches.  The pre-employment screening policy assists SMAC in certifying to USA Swimming that we have conducted pre-employments screenings for covered individuals.

The USA Swimming’s Background Check Program is a criminal record search and is not a substitute for SMAC conducting appropriate pre-employment inquiries. SMAC will carefully check references and previous employers and verify information provided by the applicant using available screening resources.

PROCEDURE

SMAC will conduct pre-employment screens prior to offering employment to any potential employee to include head coach and assistant coaches both paid and volunteer who may be working with SMAC swimmers.

The screens include:

  1. past employment references – provided by applicant
  2. verify the highest held level of education - diploma or transcript provided by applicant
  3. acquire a state motor vehicle report – provided by applicant

SMAC may also complete an internet search, if deemed necessary based on the screens above, of the applicant’s name using

  1. social networks such as facebook, instagram
  2. google media search

The club will carefully review and evaluate the information gathered as part of making a final decision to offer employment to a candidate. The screening process will be completed before the employee is officially hired and begins employment.  This process does not apply to junior coaches who work under the supervision of a SMAC Coach.
