High School Letter--Skylert Email

TO: All 9-12 students who selected Online Learning

SUBJECT: Welcome to Canyons Online Learning

Dear Parents and Guardians of High School Online Students,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year and Canyons Online!

Your child has registered for one or more online courses.  Online courses for high school students are either school-based or independent study.

School-based Online Courses

School-based online courses are taught by a teacher at your child’s high school using the same scope and sequence and curriculum resources as in-person courses.  School-based online teachers provide instructional videos and synchronous supports for students using best practices in digital teaching and learning on Canvas.   School-based online courses are denoted on your child’s schedule with a “V” at the beginning or end of the course number. Some schools may also have included “online” in the course title.

For example:         Course # 1234V Secondary 1 Math Online

                 Course # V345 Secondary 1 Math

On Monday, Aug. 24, the first day of school, your child can access their school-based online courses on Canvas and begin with the first module of instruction.  Your child’s teacher(s) will be communicating with you and/or your child with instructions for the first week of school.  Your child will receive communication through Canvas. You will receive communication through the email provided in Skyward or your child’s Canvas inbox if you have set yourself up as an Observer.

Independent Study Online Courses

Independent Study online courses are managed through Canyons Virtual High School (CVHS).  These courses are self-paced using a learning management system called Accelerate that provides learning materials and assignments.  Assignments are submitted through Accelerate and CVHS teachers grade each assignment and issue final grades. CVHS teachers will assist your child with their assignments and be in regular contact.  CVHS online courses are denoted on your child’s schedule as CVHS Release. Note--this delineation may not reflect this title until the first day of school.

For each independent study course, you and your child will receive an email from CVHS with instructions for accessing the course.  This email will be sent to your child’s csddocs account and your email will be sent to the email address provided in Skyward.
