Quick Start Guide

  1. In your Blackboard course go to the course navigation menu, locate the Control Panel.
  2. Click on Packages and Utilities.
  3. In the Export /Archive Course window.
  4. Click Export Package.

  1. The Export Course window will now open.
  1. Source Course ID. This will display the ID of the course you are exporting.
  2. File Attachments - the following two defaults are pre-selected:
  1. Under Select Course Materials, select the checkboxes for each area and tool to export (individually) or click the grey “Select all” to export all content.
  2. Click Submit on the bottom right-hand corner.

  1. Once submitted, a message will appear on the top of the screen.

 Success: This action has been queued. An email will be sent when the process is complete.

Note: Depending on the size of course, it may take Blackboard a few minutes to export the course!

  1. Check your New York Tech email. Look for a message from the Blackboard Administrator.

  1. Next, go back to the Blackboard course, click on Export/Archive Course (under Control Panel).

  1. The Export/Archive Course window will open. The exported package file will be displayed as a zip file.  The file name: ExportFile.CourseNamelotsofnumbers.zip. The course will be listed as an ExportFile  with .zip.

  1. Click on the link of the exported zip file (ExportFile.CourseName.zip) . The file will download and automatically go to your computer downloads. (it will appear in the bottom right hand corner of your screen in a square box) Tip: Create a Blackboard export folder on your desktop and save all your exported Blackboard course(s) in one place! It will be easy to find for the “import” to Canvas. 

Success Export Complete!

TIPs:

  1. Export packages are downloaded as compressed Zip files and are imported in the same format. Don’t unzip an export package or delete files, as then the contents won’t import correctly.
  2. A Blackboard course can only be exported one at a time.

II. Importing a Blackboard Course into Canvas (video tutorial)

Welcome to Canvas... New York Tech’s new Learning Management System (“LMS”)

Sandbox - A “Sandbox” course in Canvas is used as a staging area for course development. Basically, a sandbox is an empty canvas course shell that will not have student enrollments. It’s a great low-risk place to practice using Canvas and to try it out!  


Quick Start Guide                                                        Before you start

  1. To start, log into the New York Tech portal ⇨ my.nyit.edu.
  1. Find and click on the new Canvas tile.

  1. Welcome to your Dashboard (notice the “dashboard” icon). Click on the course tile (also referred to as a course card)  to open your sandbox course.

⇨   Tip:  Personalize your course tiles. It is easy to change the image.

  1. This will bring you to Courses (notice the book icon) in the navigation bar. Click on Settings - it is located toward the bottom.

  1. While on the Settings page → look to the right-hand side menu and click on Import Course Content.  

  1. Import Content window will appear. In Content Type select Blackboard 6/7/8/9 export.zip file from the drop-down menu.

  1. This will open the Import Content window.
  1. The Content Type will populate the selection “Blackboard 6/7/8/9 export.zip file”
  2. Click on the gray “Choose File” box and select the exported Blackboard file from your computer (the file ends in .zip.)
  3. Select  All content.
  4. Select  Adjust events and due dates to change your course dates then enter the semester start/end dates as requested. (You can also leave this unchecked and change the dates after the course is imported to Canvas.)
  5. Click Import.

7.  The Current Jobs screen will now appear.

  1. It will display the imported Blackboard file with the date and time.
  2. Notice the “Completed” notification to the right.

Sometimes, a completed import can also have issues. (see orange completed notification)

  1. If this occurs, click on issues to view the error notifications.

  1. A list of error notifications will open and conveniently list the details.

8.   To locate and see your imported course, go back to your Dashboard.

       Find your sandbox course tile and click on it.
