Stage 1 Desired Results

Seniors will produce writing and research to build and present knowledge.

Standards

Stage 3 – Learning Plan

Summary of Key Learning Events and Instruction

W 7: Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.  This will be done during quarter 1 and quarter 2.

W10. Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.  This will also be done throughout the first two quarters.

Students will consistently follow English Department Paper Policy and Departmental Summative Paper Requirements (see below).

Summative Paper Requirements for grade 12

-Demonstrate mastery of the summative paper by employing all of the above with two or more additional sources.  (4-6 pages), honors (6-8)

For all English department senior summative papers--

-Students in all regular English classes are to do a summative paper.

-The topics of papers should be directly related to the subject matter and literature taught in the grade-level class.

-Teachers at each grade level will provide ongoing instruction regarding summative paper requirements.

-Teachers will incorporate frequent formative assessments leading up to summative assessments.

-The English departmental paper policy and MLA format will be followed.

-Paragraph formatting will be in accordance with Purdue OWL standards.

-All papers will be graded using the BHS writing rubric.

-Summative papers will be worth ten percent of a student's final grade.

-Departmental exams (the mid-year and final) will also be worth a total of ten percent of the final grade.  Neither exam will include a long essay.

Seniors will submit formal research paper by the end of quarter 2.

Departmental Paper Policy

  1. Name, teacher's name, class, and date double-spaced in upper left hand corner of the paper according to MLA format. (date should be listed as day, month, year)
  2. Pagination according to MLA format
  3. Papers are typed and evenly double-spaced.
  4. Use a one inch margin on all sides.
  5. Indent each paragraph.
  6. Paragraph length should be proportional to length of paper with average body paragraph length 5-8 sentences.
  7. Use 12-point standard Times New Roman font.
  8. Ensure that the genre of the literature is correctly named and properly punctuated.  ie.  Titles of novels and plays are in italics; short story titles and poems are in quotes.
  9. Every essay should have a title that is typed and centered above the introduction.
  10. Papers should be proofread in their entirety before being passed in.
