Health Information

Junior School students

If a student is not feeling well, she should tell her teacher, who will send her to the Junior School Office. The student will then be signed out at the office and sent to the Health Centre with a buddy or staff member. The Health Centre nurse will assess and care for the student until she is well enough to return to class. If the student is too ill to attend classes, the nurse will contact a parent or guardian to arrange for the student to be picked up.

Senior and Middle School students

If a student is not feeling well enough to attend class, she should inform her teacher and proceed to the Senior School Main Reception, where she will sign out and request a permission slip for the Health Centre. The Health Centre nurse will assess and care for the student until she is well enough to return to class. When the student is ready to return to class, she must sign back in at the Senior School Main Reception and proceed to class with the completed Health Centre Admit Slip. If the student is too ill to attend class, the nurse will contact a parent or guardian. When feeling ill, no student should leave the school or stay out of class without speaking to a staff member. Students in Grades 7 and 8 may take a buddy with them when they go to the Health Centre.

Boarding students

If a Boarding student is too ill to attend class, the nurse will make arrangements for the student to spend additional time in the Health Centre, be seen by the school doctor or an off-campus doctor, and contact a local parent or guardian for the student to recuperate off campus if available. If a Boarding student is too ill to live in boarding, the Director of Boarding will contact the student’s family to make alternate arrangements. Boarding Students who are feeling ill during the school day may stay in the Health Centre under the care of the school nurse until they feel better or classes end and the Boarding houses reopen.

All families are required to provide the school with their daughter’s most recent health information and to report allergies and other health concerns. This information is kept for use during the year, should your daughter become ill while on campus or a school trip. It is very important that your daughter’s health records be updated whenever there is a change to her health status. The Student Health Information Form is accessible on the Portal.

Immunization

Toronto Public Health requires that your daughter’s immunization records be kept up-to-date. Should Toronto Public Health contact you regarding any missing information, immunizations or records, please heed their requests. They have the legal right to suspend students from school who are in violation of these rules and the school must comply.

Parents should call the Toronto Public Health Immunization Hotline at 416-392-1250 with any questions or updated immunization information.

Scent-Free and Nut-Sensitive Environment

Branksome Hall is a scent-free environment and we request that all students, parents, visitors, staff and faculty not wear perfume or scented cosmetics when coming to the school. We are also nut-sensitive, and no snacks or foods containing nuts should be brought onto campus.

Consequently, we do not allow bake sales at the school. We thank you for helping to protect members of our community who have allergies.

Life-Threatening Allergies

Branksome Hall has instituted a Policy and Procedure for Life-Threatening Allergies that covers the following topics:

•        Identification of students at risk

•        Availability and location of EpiPens

•        General response to an anaphylactic emergency

•        Training

•        Allergen awareness and allergen avoidance
