ASEF Summer Research Visit

About the summer research visit. ASEF works with Slovenian professors at the world’s top universities to host ASEF Junior Fellows (AJF) in their research groups for a period of 10 weeks. ASEF Junior Fellows (AJF) work with their host professors on research projects and interact with other members of the professor’s research group as well as other students at the university. At the same time, AJFs also interact with Slovenians and Slovenian communities abroad.

The research visit will allow you to grow professionally and academically, and create long-lasting ties with the university, company, and with your supervisor. You will also be an ambassador for ASEF and will interact with the Slovenian community and organizations in the area of your visit.

Research topic. The topic of the research project is agreed between AJF and the professor before or at the beginning of the visit. Many times these topics and research lead to long-term collaboration, MSc theses, PhD theses, and joint publications.

Time of your visit. The exact time of the research visit is flexible and will be discussed with the particular research group and the professor. We expect most visits to take place during the summer (June to September).

Funding. The goal is that all your expenses (travel, housing, cost of living) are paid/reimbursed. Generally, there are three sources of funding: hosting professor/university, ASEF, and external sources.

ASEF will work with you to identify funding sources to help cover all your expenses. If external funding sources cannot be identified, then ASEF will reimburse you for all your costs.

Please remember that ASEF is funded by generous gifts of many individuals across the US, Canada, Slovenia and elsewhere. Our funds are limited, so the more economical and effective we are, the more AJFs can enjoy the fellowship. Please be responsible.

Housing. There are two types of accommodation you can expect: staying with a Slovenian family or living in a student dormitory on or near the university campus. You will work together with ASEF/professor to arrange accommodation.

Travel. Generally, you will need to book the ticket yourself (while in some cases your professor will purchase tickets for you). If you buy the ticket you will need to send us the receipt in order for ASEF to reimburse it. Please use your best judgment and find the cheapest ticket. Generally, the ticket price should be around $1000 or less.

Allowance. On top of this ASEF will also provide a stipend of $1,500 to cover your other expenses (food, transportation, etc.).

Health insurance. AJFs need health insurance. In some cases, the host university will provide health insurance or other cases you will be responsible for it. Please check with your professor. If you need to get insurance yourself you can obtain it at Coris Adriatic-Slovenica or Vzajemna.

Visa. Most most likely you will not need any visa to enter the host country, because you will be staying there for only 10 weeks and will be doing voluntary research at the hosting institution. However, please check with your host professor, because some institutions actually do require you to obtain a visa.

After the ASEF Junior Fellowship application process is finished. The next steps are:

  1. Regularly attend preparatory and training events (3-6 months before the start of the visit) to learn about your host university and country, and about good research practice.
  2. Reach out to ASEF and the supervisor to agree on the dates of your visit. The dates are flexible but you have to finish the visit in the calendar year 2020.
  3. Start arranging for your housing: Talk to ASEF and your professor.
  4. Start searching for your airplane ticket.
  5. Ask the professor about visa requirements and health insurance.
  6. Obtain health insurance if needed.
