Sourcerer: Base Class

Description

Drawing their arcane might from a well of power deep within the fabric of reality, Sourcerers bend reality through channeling the power gathered from the Echoes of the Primordials, rather than the intense study of more traditional arcane casters. Many believe that this power comes from ancient entities beyond the spans of time, or is simply innate to the world around us, but few are truly sure. Others suggest that the ability to channel arcane magic through a source is the destiny of all mortals - an ascension whose time has come, and that the few Sourcerers that exist are but the nascent children of a bright, and perhaps magnificent, future.

Still, Sourcerers adhere to the rules of mortal magic in many ways - through incantation and concentration, the weave of magic flows, sometimes with more subtle distinctions between their learned brethren, and other times in stark contrast. Unhindered by the anchors of the arcane, the Sourcerer strides through the theater of war, bringing down those who would stand before them.

The Sourcerer is an Arcane spell-caster. The Sourcerer should choose a special symbol that is their caster-sigil and mark their packets with it. A Sourcerer must also have an Eldritch Source as described below.

The Unbinding

Due to the nature of the interaction with heavier armor and the Eldritch Source of the Sourcerer’s magics, they are unable to use their Archetype Powers if they are utilizing non-Barrier Armor.

* The Sourceror’s Eldritch Source takes the place of the Basic Arcane Spell Book, and does not confer the additional four spells known that normally comes with Basic Arcane. In addition, skills and powers that require a spellbook are unavailable to Sourcerors and their Advanced Classes. Additionally, only spells you are able to cast can be added to your Spells Known.

Note: Archetype Sourcerers gain 1 additional Cantrip and Novice Spell Slot per the Primary Training Archetype Power.

Note: Life Points and Maximum Spikes can be found in the Character Level Table.

Base Incant

“I call upon the Weave Arcane, its boundless power, my domain,

With Echoes bound through wielded Source, I conjure bursts of Arcane force,

By my hand, my will sublime, I cleave the winding streams of Time,

With strength unleashed, unfettered soul, Fate is mine now to control…”

Sourcerer Innate Powers

Eldritch Battery [Innate]

Requirement: Sourcerer Level 1

Incantation: None

Call: None

Target: Self                                Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: None                                Refresh: Immediate

Accent: None                                Effect: Refresh

The Sourcerer can meditate and commune with the Weave to rebuild focus and refresh their spell slots. The Sourcerer can spend a Short Rest reconnecting with the weave of ley-lines that lay just beneath the fabric of reality.

Between Long Rests, the Sourcerer can refresh a number of Arcane Novice spell-slots equal to two times their total levels in their Arcane-casting Classes. This power may be used to refresh spells from any of this character’s Arcane spellcasting classes, but this power does not stack with similar powers from those classes.

This can be done in any increment and the Sourcerer can refresh a Arcane Adept spell-slot in the place of two Arcane Novice spell-slots. Greater spell-slots take the place of three Novice spell-slots, and Master spell-slots take the place of four Novice spell-slots.

Additional benefits come if this Power is used in an area of concentrated magical power (such as an Arcane Locus), with a personal rite (determined by the Sourcerer). Up to three times per Long Rest, if the Sourcerer uses this Power in that way, they can Refresh a Arcane Novice spell-slot that does not count toward the total Refresh limit between Long Rests. This may occur in addition to Refreshing other spell-slots as normal.

Eldritch Source [Innate]

Requirements: Sourcerer Level 1

Incantation: None

Call: None

Target: Self                                Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: None                                Refresh: Immediate

Accent: None                                Effect: Special

Drawing from power deep within the fabric of the cosmos, the Sourcerer does not rely upon studied knowledge or divine faith to drive the weave of arcane forces at their disposal. Instead, tapping into an Eldritch Source of arcane magic, the Sourcerer simply draws upon the Echoes of Primordials to alter the world around them, and it obeys their command. While the understanding around the Primordials and their Echoes is limited, and hard information scant, the power wielded by the talents of the Sourcerers is unmistakable.

The Sourcerer’s power is channeled through an object called an Eldritch Source, and it is a crafted, physical object that the character must hold in their hand. An Eldritch Source is created by various crafting skills, and incorporates ever more rare and exotic materials as the Source nears the pinnacle of its power. The Source itself is simply a conduit for the Sourcerer's power, and thus can be anything from a wand, orb, or ritual dagger to the skull of a former lover. Due to the Source’s volatile nature, weapons, shields, or other items required to be held in the hand to activate Powers cannot be used as a Source. The caster may hold no other Wielded items in the same hand as the Source.

The four most basic accents available to novice Sourcerers are Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Acid and are readily found in most arcane emporiums. Eldritch Sources must be a solid durable object at least 5” in one dimension and 1” in the others. In addition, spell preparation for the Arcane Sphere is now no longer needed, as the innate spark of the arcane simply forms to their will. Thus the Sourcerer may cast any of their known Arcane sphere spells without forethought, as long as an appropriate spell slot is available.

After completing a Long Rest, a
Sourcerer may designate a new object as their Source. This Source must follow all rules defining an appropriate object. If that object is not an Empowered Source, it has one of the following accents: Acid, Ice, Flame, or Lightning. The Sorcerer may only have one Source at any one time, and this Source will only work for the Sourcerer who designated it.

The Sorcerer also learns spells in a new way that alters how they fundamentally learn magic. When learning a new Arcane spell it does not need to follow the standard rules of recording it in a spell book; instead they learn it directly in their mind. This practice is extremely volatile and will absorb any spells that they have written into spell books from other Arcane classes as well. If the Sorcerer has a spell book from another Arcane class they forget 4 Arcane spells from the spellbook but all other spells are recorded in the Sorcerer’s mind. Non-Arcane spells are not affected and still need to be recorded in a spell book and prepared as normal.

However, with this power comes risk: should the Sorcerer find themself without an Eldritch Source, they will lose all Arcane spellcasting ability until the Eldritch Source is back in hand.

Note: The Sourceror’s Eldritch Source takes the place of the Basic Arcane Spell Book, and does not confer the additional four spells known that normally comes with Basic Arcane. The Sourcerer cannot use Powers or Skills that rely on a Spell Book for Arcane spells. Divine spellcasting is not affected by this restriction.

Sourcerer Archetype Powers

Primary Training [Archetype]

Requirement: Level 2 Sourcerer

The Sourcerer gains an additional Cantrip from the Sourcerer Class list and an additional Novice Spell Slot.

Astride the Weave [Archetype]

Requirements: Sourcerer Level 2

Incantation: None

Call: None

Target: Self                                Duration: Passive

Delivery: None                                Refresh: Immediate

Accent: None                                Effect: Special

The Sourcerer’s channeling of magic through the Eldritch Source unbinds them from the traditional need to remain still while gathering power, allowing the arcane theurgist to walk while incanting their Sourcerer Cantrips and Spells.

During the casting of any Sourcerer Cantrip or Spell, the Sourcerer gains the Inherent Slowed condition, but is otherwise free to move. This ability does not override the specific requirements of the spell being cast, thus, if the specific spell itself calls for the caster to remain in place, or pivot on one foot, or any other requirement, the caster must abide by those restrictions.

Enduring Source [Archetype]

Requirements: Sourcerer Level 4

Incantation: None

Call: None

Target: Self                                Duration: Long Rest

Delivery: None                                Refresh: Long Rest

Accent: None                                Effect: Refresh, Grant Plus Spike Damage

The Sourcerer’s channeling of magic through the Eldritch Source allows them to make sacrifices other more traditional arcane casters cannot.

During any Long Rest, the Sourcerer may Sacrifice a Cantrip that they know, other than Cancel, losing the ability to cast it, until their next Long Rest. In exchange, the Sourcerer gains +1 Spike Damage, until their next Long Rest.

This Spike Damage Bonus only applies to Spells from the Sourcerer Spell list and cannot be applied to any other usage of Spikes.

In all cases, the normal stacking rules apply to these Spike Damage bonuses.

Power Sink [Archetype]

Requirements: Sourcerer Level 10

Incantation: None

Call: None

Target: Self                                Duration: Passive

Delivery: None                                Refresh: None

Accent: None                                Effect: None

When creating an Eldritch Source, the Sourcerer may choose an additional Eldritch Accent on a Source. While wielding the affected Source, the caster may use either Accent when the [Eldritch Accent] is noted. When choosing this Eldritch Accent for a given power, all instances of the [Eldritch Accent] must be the same Accent.

Sourcerer Class Skills

Additional Source - 4 CP [Class]

Requirements: Sourcerer Level 4

Incantation: RP Short Rest to Create; Focus Quick 100 while altering your binding to a different Eldritch Source.

Call: None

Target: Self                                Duration: Permanent

Delivery: None                                Refresh: Short Rest, Immediate

Accent: None                                Effect: Special

The Sourcerer has mastered the arts of Source manipulation such that they may have an additional Eldritch Source bound.

After finishing a Short Rest linked to an object, the Sourcerer may designate a new item to become their Source in addition to their first. If that item is not an Empowered Source, you must choose one of the following accents: Acid, Lighting, Flame or Ice.

While a character must hold an Eldritch Source in their hand to use its Accent, the character may switch between two different Eldritch Sources that they are bound to with a Focus Quick 100.

Accent Substantiation - 1 CP [Class] (8)

Requirements: Sourcerer Level 4

Incantation: None

Call: None

Target: Self                                Duration: Passive

Delivery: None                                Refresh: None

Accent: None                                Effect: Special

The Sourcerer can bend the elemental forces of reality itself to mold to their purpose. Many cantrips and spells have optional modes or bonuses that only apply when the accent matches a specific requirement. This skill allows the Sourcerer to gain the benefits of these options with another Accent.

This skill may be purchased multiple times, each time allowing the Sourcerer choose from the substitution list below.

Eldritch Accent

Substituted Effect

Agony

Acid

Darkness

Acid

Force

Flame

Radiance

Flame

Time

Ice

Will

Illusion

Lightning

Mind

For Example: Trivian the Sourcerer is wielding his Eldritch Source with the Agony accent. When casting a spell that has a special effect that benefits from the Acid Accent (such as Acid Ruinbringer), the Agony Accent counts as the Acid Accent for purposes of that spell. Note that this does not change the accent of that spell.

Unsuppressable - 3 CP [Class]

Requirements: Sourcerer Level 5

Incantation: None

Call: “Concentration”

Target: Self                                Duration: Passive

Delivery: None                                Refresh: None

Accent: None                                Effect: Special

The Sourcerer is adept at protecting their mind against the distractions of combat and is able to recite incantations when others may be interrupted. If the Sourcerer has any amount of active Barrier remaining after being affected by a power or attack, they may continue Sourcerer incants while being struck by damage and Effects, as long as those effects do not otherwise prevent casting.

The caster need not stop casting or restart their Sourcerer spells when being struck during incantations. They should call “Concentration” at the completion of their incantation, along with any relevant defenses.

Scales of the Primordial - 3 CP [Class]

Requirements: Sourcerer Level 6

Incantation: None

Call: “Grant 2 Barrier to Self”

Target: Self                                Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: None                                Refresh: Short Rest

Accent: None                                Effect: Grant Barrier

The Sourcerer can wave arcane scales into the air to protect them from harm. When taking a Short Rest they may grant themselves 2 Barrier by calling “Grant 2 Barrier to Self.” Gathering the mental fortitude is a rather lengthy process, but none-the-less the result will turn most blades, and can mean the difference between life and death.

Sourcerer Cantrips

Incantation: “I call upon the Weave…”

Cancel [Cantrip]

Incantation: "... to retrieve this Eldritch force.”

Call: None

Target: Packet (Spell-Ball), Self                Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: Touch                                Refresh: Immediate

Accent: None                                Effect: Refresh

This minor cantrip takes the power out of a spell-ball (or multiple spell-balls) that has already been charged and returns that power to the caster. The spell-ball becomes inert, and the caster refreshes the spell-slot that was used to charge the spell-ball. If the spell charges more than one spell-ball, all the spell-balls must still be charged in order to cancel the spell.

Circle of Four [Cantrip]

Incantation: "... to forge a ring of the four elements.”

Call: “1 [Acid/Flame/Ice/Lightning]”

Target: Individual                        Duration: Instantaneous

Delivery: Packet (Spell-Packet)                Refresh: Immediate

Accent: [Acid/Flame/Ice/Lightning]        Effect: None, only damage

The Sourcerer calls forth a ring of elemental power that wreaths their hand in visible crackling energy. Once cast, the caster chooses from one of the four Accents, however, the newly chosen accent may not be an accent they already have charged.

The caster may have up to four charges of this cantrip charged at any one time. Once charged, the caster need only call the Effect of the cantrip when throwing the spell-packet. If the Sourcerer uses any other Powers, is reduced to zero Life Points, or completes a Rest, these charges are lost.

If the Sourcerer expends a Spike when casting this cantrip, the call is changed to “Wounding 2 by [Acid/Flame/Ice/Lightning]” for that charged packet.

Eldritch Bolt [Cantrip]

Incantation: "... to craft Eldritch Bolts.”

Call: “1 [Eldritch Accent]”

Target: Individual                        Duration: Instantaneous

This minor cantrip charges a packet of materia with the Element of the Eldritch Source’s Accent which will do 1 point of that Accent damage to those it hits.

Eldritch Shield [Cantrip]

Incantation: "... to shield against the elements.”

Call: “Grant Protect vs [Eldritch Accent]”

Target: Self                                Duration: Until Used

Delivery: None                                Refresh: Focus Quick 100

Accent: [Eldritch Accent]                 Effect: Grant Protect

The Sourcerer throws up a shield of energy to protect themself from the elements. This gives the caster one Protect from the accent of their Eldritch Source. If the Sourcerer has more than one Eldritch Accent, they may have a Protect for each of those accents.

Impaling Skewer [Cantrip]

Incantation: "... to craft an impaling Skewer.”
