MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

This past Wednesday, kindergarten through 5th grade students and staff arrived at Tynan Elementary School in South Boston to find racist and threatening messages spray painted on their front doors. Two people lost their lives in racially motivated murders in Kentucky on Wednesday, October 24. Eleven people lost their lives in an anti-semitic attack in Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 27. This has been a terrible month.

It is at times like these that we must understand our Shared Values are not just beliefs, but calls to action. Diversity with Respect, Community with Social Responsibility...if you believe that you should respect people, you must show it; if you believe you have a responsibility to the community, you must act.

I am proud of the student leaders and staff who joined me at the support rally at the Tynan on Friday morning to show the Tynan community that the Boston Arts Academy community stands with them. Please see this message from Student Government President Deyna Francisco: "E-Board was able to attend this greeting and share our vision of Diversity with Respect. We feel proud that we were able to be part of a moment where we were activists for equality in the most peaceful way imaginable."

I am also proud of the BAA students who will be working the polls this coming Tuesday, November 6...and especially proud of the BAA students who are casting their first votes in the election on Tuesday.

The great artist James Baldwin once wrote: “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Thank you BAA community for taking action, and have a great week!

Lunch policy: All students are expected in the cafeteria. There are two exceptions: 1. Seniors, who are allowed in the BAA lobby area. 2. students who obtain a pass before lunch to work with a teacher or attend a club under the direct supervision of a teacher.

*NEW* Attention all current voters and voters-to-be! On Tuesday, November 6 those who can vote have the option to vote on whether or not to maintain an existing nondiscrimination bill that protects transgender rights. It’s important that everyone understands what their vote means, as the language of question 3 can be confusing.

Question 3 states:

A "yes" vote supports upholding Senate Bill 2407, a bill to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity in public places—such as hotels, restaurants, and stores.

A "no" vote opposes SB 2407 and repeals the law designed to prohibit discrimination based on gender identity in public places—such as hotels, restaurants, and stores.
