TOPICS FOR EX, IMP, & DEBATE

IMP: All topics are quotations

PF/LD:  January topic.

Pilot rules are NOT in effect.

____________________________

IMPROMPTU

ASU uses the NSDA rules, which lets you divide your seven (7) minutes however you wish into preparation delivery of your speech (rather than CHSSA’s strict 2-min prep / 5-min delivery split)

___________________________

WORLD SCHOOLS DEBATE

World Schools Debate is a three-on-three format. While a given team may consist of five members, only three students from a team participate in a given debate.

Teams will be assigned one of two sides in each round: either the government team proposing the motion or the opposition team advocating the rejection of the motion. Debaters present their position on a topic, refute their opponents, and respond to questions throughout the course of the debate (during other speeches!).

Resolutions come in two types: prepared motions and impromptu motions. There will be two impromptu topic rounds: Round 1 and Round 4.

PACKING TIPS:

  1. Liquids, gels (inc toothpaste), creams/lotions, and aerosols (hairspray) are limited to 3.4 oz (100 ml). The total sum of them must fit in a quart-size bag. Pack this near the top of your suitcase in case TSA has a problem.
  2. Bring comfortable walking shoes! The campus is about a mile away from the hotel, so if you’d rather not walk a mile in your dress shoes then bring a second pair of shoes.
  3. Bring ~$60 for meals (or more if you tend to get really hungry).
  4. SPEECH — Bring ALL scripts - preferably a printed copy, but digital is ok. You will want this to review your piece, and it will be necessary if you get challenged (unlikely, but possible).

CHAPERONES & JUDGES

All chaperones will be required to judge at the tournament.

All ballots will be submitted online, so all judges will need an account at  Tabroom.com. If you have not created a Tabroom account yourself, I have done so using the email address shown in the table below, with the default password “msjspeech”.

Speech — All days

You will need to bring an electronic device with you to submit the ballot. A phone or tablet is sufficient for this purpose, but I find a laptop much more comfortable to use to type out feedback. I’ve prepared a set of guides to walk you through how this process works; if you are not comfortable with the e-ballot system, I suggest reading the one for your event prior to the tournament. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.

You should always take notes during each student’s speech so you can provide them with helpful feedback. You can do this on paper, but you will need to transfer it to your online ballot after the round. Don’t worry though, you’ll be able to update them until the tournament is over. Please submit the ballot as soon as you’ve made your decision, then come back to edit your comments.

SPEECH JUDGES — During the round, timing will be required. If you use your phone to do this, please make sure it is in stopwatch mode, otherwise you will not know if students exceed the grace period for the event. I prefer instead to use the timers on the ballot, since they will roll over past the set time, but be warned that they will reset if you refresh the page or hit the back button while its counting down.

If you have any questions about the rules for your specific event, please ask me or the judges’ room staff to clarify for you.

HELPFUL DOCUMENTS:

General Speech Judging Instructions

Basic overview of tournament logistics, as well as the basic principles of each event.

Important notes about speech events:

  • POI (Programmed Oral Interp) is the new name for Thematic Interp
  • Informative is the same as Expository
  • Prose and Poetry are NOT the same as OPP. They are essentially a single- genre POI, and should therefore be judged similar to POI (TI).

Breakfast and lunch for judges will be provided by ASU, free of charge. Simply stop by the judges’ room and pick something up.  [[NOTE — Not sure if this will be true this year: last year they provided only snacks, while in years past full meals were provided.]]
