TSSAA Postseason Financial Information

Football Playoffs

TSSAA is often asked about the breakdown of revenue from the TSSAA football playoffs.  The graph below shows the allocation of the revenue generated from the 2022 postseason. Participating schools each receive 25 percent of the gross revenue.  An additional 25 percent is earmarked to help pay the catastrophic insurance coverage premium for TSSAA member schools.  Payment for officials comes out of the remaining 25 percent.

Championship Participation Distributions

The Board of Control has established formulas for distributing shares of gate receipts from the football and basketball state championships to participating schools.

Despite several seasons impacted by COVID-19, $286,000 was distributed to the schools participating in the state basketball tournaments in the five years between 2019 and 2023.

For the BlueCross Bowl football championships, team distributions between 2018 and 2022 have totaled more than $422,000.  Team allotments for football are based, in part, on the number of advance tickets a school sells through the online ticketing platform.

Other Postseason Tournaments and Awards

The TSSAA Legislative Council determines the allocation of funds for postseason tournaments.

For district and region tournaments throughout the year that are organized and sponsored by TSSAA, schools contribute only 18% of gate receipts to the state office.  After expenses for the games are paid by the host school(s), the participating teams split the remaining funds.

TSSAA uses a significant portion of its 18% to provide champion and runners-up plaques for every district and region tournament across the state.  TSSAA spends more than $330,000 on awards annually.
