Audition Information
Hey there! Welcome to UVA A Cappella auditions— we are so excited to hear you sing and to welcome new members into the a cappella community. Before you begin working on your audition videos, here are a couple instructions and bits of advice that we hope help you! It is really important that you read this section before you begin. May the odds be ever in your favor!

It will give you great audition advice, as well as explain how to do the scales portion of the audition!
How to record your audition:
- Start by setting your phone horizontally in front of you. Make sure that at least your waist up is visible so we can see you clearly!
- When you start recording each video, please begin by stating your FULL NAME, YEAR, and what you are SINGING
- For example, before your scales videos you would say: “I will be singing my scales”
- Similarly, before your solo video you would say: “I will be singing ______ by ______”
- Title/save your videos as the following:
- For your scale video: yourfullname_ascendingscales/ yourfullname_descendingscales (ex. mariahcarey_ascendingscales, mariahcarey_descendingscales)
- For your solo video: yourfullname_solo (ex. mariahcarey_solo)
- And for any other videos, you get the idea!
Scales:
- We have standardized the format for scales across all groups, so here are the instructions for any group that requests that you submit scales videos.
- You will submit two separate videos, one for ascending scales and one for descending scales.
- Feel free to sing them on any syllable that works for you! We recommend “ooh” and “aah” if you’re not sure.
- We have provided you with guide tracks that you must sing along to while you perform your scales. They are available in this folder. (Make sure you log in with your UVA email to access them!)
- If you identify as a Soprano/Mezzo/Alto, you will make one video singing along with the track titled SopranoMezzoAltoAscendingScales and a separate video singing along with the track titled SopranoMezzoAltoDescendingScales.
- If you identify as a Tenor/Baritone/Bass, you will do the same thing, except with the TenorBaritoneBassAscendingScales and TenorBaritoneBassDescendingScales videos.
- The guide tracks go super high and super low! We do not expect anyone to be able to sing to either end, nor do we want you to ruin your voice trying to do so. Please sing only until you feel comfortable!
- Make sure to watch the audition instructions video linked above to understand how to correctly perform the scales!
Now, all you have left to record is your verse and chorus of your solo song and anything else that the specific groups you choose to audition for request!
Frequently asked questions
- Can I audition for multiple groups?
- ABSOLUTELY! In fact, we encourage you to audition for as many groups as possible! You never know where you might find your home. :)
- I’m thinking about waiting until the fall to audition due to COVID. Should I do that?
- While it is ultimately your decision, we recommend that you audition this semester! Most groups were not able to do auditions this past fall, so we are READY to accept new members and fill up all the empty spots in our groups. Also, next fall, there will be the entire Class of 2025 who will be able to audition as well. So, the odds are more in your favor this semester than ever, if you know what I mean. And worst case, you audition again in the fall!
- I want to learn more about a cappella at UVA. How do I do this?
- Come to our virtual open houses! We highly recommend that anyone interested in auditioning attend at least one. They will be held on Jan 25 and Feb 2 for everyone, and there will be a POC specific open house on Jan 28. They are all going to be from 6-8pm— drop in and chat for as long as you’d like! CHoosE(Christian Hoos Exalt) CHoosE is the only co-ed Christian a cappella group at the University of Virginia. More than just an a cappella group, CHoosE is a family built on the radical unity of Christ, loving and serving each other with intentionality and strengthening ourselves for ministry at UVA and beyond.
