MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK |
This is the last full week of semester one (the semester ends next Wednesday, January 16). This is the time to think about "ending well." We began with the semester with my asking you to think about "beginning with the end in mind," beginning by envisioning how you want the semester to end. Now's a good time to return to those thoughts and to do your very best to close out the semester in a focused, strong way. It's also a good time to reflect on your process and to set some goals for semester 2. I want to thank everyone for making our first semester in Dorchester a successful one, and have a great week! |

*NEW* Students accepted into this spring's dual enrollment (college courses) program are required to attend a lunch meeting on Wednesday, January 9 during lunch in A-202. Please see the email from the Proarts Director, Ms. Wyner (zoe@proarts.org) for more information, or email Ms. Bautista at jbautista@bostonartsacademy.org. BAA Talent Show 2019. Students, please remember to sign up for Boston Arts Academy’s 2019 Talent Show if you would like to participate. Interested students must meet these eligibility requirements.The audition sign-up sheet is available on the Student Government bulletin board (across from the main office), and will stay up until the audition dates have passed. All artistic forms are encouraged to be part of the audition and talent show process (Visual Arts, Fashion, Theatre, Music, and Dance). *NEW* BPS + Greenovate Boston Youth Leaders Training. Do you want to learn more about climate change's impacts on Boston? Do you want to be trained as a youth climate leader so you can make your schools and neighborhoods healthier, greener places to learn, play, and live? Attend a free Greenovate Boston Youth Leaders training led by Greenovate Boston and BPS. The training will empower students with City of Boston climate change knowledge, leadership skills to train fellow students, and resources to lead environmental actions. Register here. *NEW* Volunteer Opportunity: The William E. Russell Elementary School is seeking volunteers to help at their Multicultural Night on Wednesday, March 13. They are looking for students who are interested in leading a break out session (cultural dance, drumming, art, etc.), performing at the event, or choreographing basic dances for their students to perform. If you are interested, please contact Elizabeth Reynolds Lupo at ereynoldslupo@bostonpublicschools.org. NPR Student Podcast Challenge. NPR is inviting students to create a podcast. This contest is aimed at students in grades 5-12. Each podcast should be between three and 12 minutes long. The 2019 Bank of America Student Leaders program is currently accepting applications from juniors and seniors from now until February 1, 2019 (no deadline extensions). This signature philanthropic program offers youth the opportunity to receive a paid, non-profit internship and to attend a weeklong conference in Washington, D.C. to learn about enacting positive social change.

JFK-GE Foundation STEM Scholarship Program. Calling all Boston Public Schools seniors with a passion for science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM)! The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and GE Foundation have established a scholarship program to assist high school seniors graduating from a Boston Public School who plan to continue their education in college majoring in a STEM field of study. The 2019 program will be accepting applications from December 17, 2018 through February 7, 2019 at 4 p.m. Click here for more information and to apply. Let’s Get Ready College Access Program. Let’s Get Ready is a 9-week curriculum administered by trained college student Coaches that includes SAT prep, college application guidance, college visits, and more. The program is provided at no cost to high school seniors and juniors with qualifying financial need. *RSVP NEEDED* The next Family Council meeting is on Tuesday, January 8 from 6:00-8:00pm. Hayden Frederick-Clarke, the Director of Cultural Proficiency for the Boston Public Schools, will be joining us for a conversation about the role of metal detectors in our school community. We welcome all students, family members, and staff for this conversation. In order to accommodate the different events taking place in the building on this evening, please RSVP to this event by emailing Carolyn Meadows at cmeadows@bostonartsacademy.org. *NEW* Are you proud of the hard work a BAA student has put into Memphis the Musical? A unique way to let your student know that you're rooting for them during Memphis the Musical is to send a Shout Out. A Shout Out is short message (200 characters max) that is printed in the program book. Each Shout Out is $50 and is about a quarter of a page in the program book.

Questions? Contact giving@bostonartsacademyfdn.org. Tech Rehearsal for MEMPHIS. From January 18 through January 25, many of our students will be preparing for the musical, MEMPHIS. It takes many long hours of technical rehearsals to create the set, lights and costumes for such a big show. Your student has been working hard to learn their part, and January 18-25 is when we will combine all the elements for performances on January 25 and 26. Students involved with the production are expected to be at the Strand Theatre (543 Columbia Road, Dorchester) January 21-27; the rehearsal schedule, along with additional details, can be found here. We are also looking for support with meals during tech week. If you are able to donate food or volunteer to make a meal, please sign up here! Donations needed for Nurse's Office. Please consider donating the following items if you are able. You can drop these items off at BAA - Attn: Nurse Jocelyne. August Wilson Monologue Contest! Monday, January 7, 5:30pm. BAA Theatre students will compete in this national contest in the hopes of advancing to the national competition in NYC in March. The finalist from BAA will compete in the regional semi-finals at the Huntington Theatre on Saturday, January 19. SEEKING FOOD DONATIONS INTERSESSION WEEK.
