Overview
We champion the importance of providing children with food containing high nutritional value as it is the key to their healthy growth. Our chefs take a minimum fuss approach during preparation and cooking to keep the natural goodness in our food. Eating is a very social event, we encourage a relaxed and welcoming environment in our contemporary surroundings, in order for both staff and pupils can enjoy all the food that is on offer.
Menus have been designed following strict guidelines from the Department of Education, School Food in England. Click here for more information.
Healthy and Balanced Food
Providing a healthy balanced diet is an area that our catering department takes extremely seriously, and menus are planned to provide a wide selection of food items for breakfast, lunch and dinner. All our menus are designed to provide a varied and changing cycle of healthy and nourishing food with an emphasis on using fresh produce and ingredients. Our menus meet and indeed exceed all the criteria of the School Food Trust for food-based standards.
The importance of maintaining a healthy, balanced diet cannot be underestimated. With the correct diet, children can be more positively responsive both mentally and physically, to the daily challenges they will experience throughout their school life.
Food Portions
All pupils are reminded to only ask for a serving size which they know they will eat. Let’s work together to reduce food waste. When being served, pupils can ask catering staff for as much rice/pasta/potatoes/vegetables as they would like to eat, the salad bar and fresh fruit counters are all self-service. See this poster to find out more.
Food Committee
We hold regular Food Committee Meetings where pupils, along with the Catering Manager and members of the catering department have the opportunity to suggest ideas, voice preferences and make an active contribution to the development of the food service available. Decisions made during these meetings give the children a true sense of involvement and responsibility for the selections they can eventually see on the menu. Menu changes are made frequently to reflect the seasons and commodity availability. Speciality days are often held to celebrate different food cultures and to commemorate religious and national occasions throughout the year.
Sustainability - Food For Life
As specialist caterers we genuinely care about what goes into the food we create. Our chefs nurture direct relationships with our suppliers to ensure they have access to the best seasonal produce, delivering more sustainable catering made from fresh, local, honest ingredients. The standards met are created with public health and the UN’s Sustainable Development goals in mind.
We serve our food responsibly and ethically and are proud of our long standing relationship with local suppliers. All of our food is cooked from scratch every day. Our meat and poultry can be traced back to British firms, and we only use Salsa credited supplies. Our fresh milk is 100% Red Tractor along with the cream we purchase. Fresh British fruit and vegetables are used wherever possible, and our eggs all have the British Lion mark. Our fresh fish supplier works closely with the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) to ensure sustainable fishing.
Special Dietary Requirements
Special dietary requirements, including food intolerances and allergies, are catered for by our professional catering team to ensure every child has the benefit of a healthy, nutritious and balanced diet.
Nuts
The School holds a policy of not actively purchasing any nuts or products which contain nuts for any meals or snacks provided by the School. We also regularly remind all staff and pupils that they should not bring any nut-products onto site in their own private meals and snacks. In this way, we aim to do our best to ensure the School site is as nut-free as possible.
Food Hygiene Standards
Our approach to hygiene is exemplary and we hold the highest rating of food safety standards awarded by Mendip District Council.
