Boarding Handbook 2020-21

Routines and Leaves

Routines and Leaves will be reviewed throughout the year based on the recommendations from Toronto Public Health and Branksome’s Risk Management Team. Please see Appendix A for more information.

Daily Schedule

Students living in Boarding have a unique set of needs. Living and studying away from home requires determination, resilience and independence which we seek to foster through mentoring, programming and establishing clear boundaries.

7:00 - 7:30 a.m.

Boarding Community Screening

The Titan HST screening must be completed in partnership with the Boarding Advisor, every day. The screening must be completed before 7:45 a.m. and prior to leaving the boarding house. During school holidays (when off campus) or vacation time, screening does not need to be completed.

Boarding students with a cellphone (that is not a smartphone) will receive a text message to complete their screening and will also be provided with a Titan HST fob for contact tracing purposes. If the student does not have a cellphone, smart or otherwise, they will complete their screening through the JotForm software and be required to track their movements throughout the day.

Temperature checks will be completed by the Boarding Advisors each morning before students leave their rooms.

7:30–8:15 a.m.

Breakfast in the AWC Dining Hall

All students must arrive in the revised uniform for this year by 7:50 a.m.

A hot breakfast is served along with cold cereal, milk, yogurt, fruit, smoothies and juice.

Boarding staff take attendance. Students must check in by 7:50 a.m. otherwise they will be considered late for breakfast.

8:15–8:30 a.m.

School begins (staggered start times) | Boarding Houses Open For Virtual Classes

Boarding students in Grade 11 and 12 with a first period spare must attend breakfast in the AWC, but may return to the Boarding house after 8:15 a.m. until the start of their second period class.

If students are attending Virtual classes, they will return to their designated study location on campus. Students who are attending face to face lessons will follow the directional flow on campus as indicated by the signage.

Should there be an emergency during the school day, students can contact the Director of Boarding to gain access to their room.

Students are not permitted to attend classes if they are unwell. In case of illness, students must go to the #4 Elm/Principal’s House during the school day to be under the care of the nurse.

Leaving campus during the school day

Only the Director of Boarding can excuse a Boarding student from class.

Parents or guardians should contact the Director of Boarding to notify of any upcoming expected absences (e.g. medical or dental appointments) for their child.

Notifications should be submitted at least a week in advance as a Boarding staff member is required to accompany the student to the appointment (Grades 7-12). Parents, guardians or a boarding staff member must accompany any Grade 7–12 student to off-campus appointments. If the situation in Toronto improves and the guidance from Toronto Public Health approves, students in Grades 11-12 may be permitted to attend off-campus appointments unsupervised.

Once permission is granted, students leaving campus must sign out at the School Office.

Lunch

All meal costs are included in the Boarding fees. Lunch for in-person days will either be provided to students in their classrooms if they pre-order a salad/sandwich option, or, students can pick up a hot lunch from the HUB in the Senior School. On virtual learning days, Boarding students will eat in the AWC dining room. The lunch menu can be found on the Portal.

3:45 p.m.

Classes End | Boarding Houses Open For All Boarding Students | Free Time

All students return to the Boarding house or check in by 4:00 p.m.

An individually portioned/wrapped snack is provided for students as they arrive home from school.

If students are attending afterschool, on-campus co-curricular activities, they must call their Boarding house or speak with their Boarding Advisor face-to-face to let us know their name, location of activity, start time and end time of their activity before 4:00 p.m.
