Project Objective(s)

Project Activities

To provide access to elementary school students to books in Spanish, as well as in English for students in Kindergarten thru sixth grades

Description/Location/Background:

Schools in Mezcala, smaller communities between Mezcala and Chapala, Chapala elementary schools, a poverty area community center in Tepehua , Chapala, Ajijic elementary schools as well as a community center of Lake Chapala Society that provides ESOL classes to students.

Community need and involvement

The elementary schools in Lakeside from Mezcala thru Ajijic have very little access to checkout books to bring home to read and parental involvement with the extraordinary need to have teachers and parents involved with reading books with the students. This also includes some after school community centers, such as Poco e Poco. Research that has been conducted has shown the gains of students to have books in hand to bring home for parental involvement. Mobile libraries will provide all students access to the books to checkout for a period of time.

Community Acceptance/Approval

 Schools welcome the support

Beneficiaries:

The project will benefit a variety of sectors which include elementary school students, elementary school students, parents and families of the elementary school students, as well as local community organizations that are working to improve literacy rates, English as a second language and after school healthy alternatives.
