Online Learning: Parent Communication

TO: All K-8 students who selected online learning

SUBJECT: Welcome to Canyons Online Learning

Dear Parents and Guardians of K-8 Online Students,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year and Canyons Online!  

Canyons Online uses best practices in digital teaching and learning to deliver instruction in an online environment.  Your student has enrolled in at least one of the core courses offered:  English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  

On Monday, Aug. 24, the first day of school, your child may begin attending Canyons Online by logging in to their Canvas account. To prepare your child for their online experience, please review the Getting Started Checklist below.

Getting Started Checklist

• Pick up materials and a device (if needed) from school on the school’s designated pick-up day
• Designate a space for learning that is free from distractions
• Organize learning materials and supplies so they are easily accessible (pencils, paper, headphones, workbooks, etc.)
• Ensure that you can log in to Skyward and Canvas 
• Develop a system to help your student remember their passwords
• Develop a realistic daily/weekly learning schedule that works with your family’s needs
• Set clear times when adults in the home will be available to offer support
• Review the Online Learning Handbook
• Review Online Learning Orientation (available August 24)
• Set up Canvas Observer account 
• Bookmark parentconnections.canyonsdistrict.org for future reference and support

Your child’s teacher(s) will be communicating with you and/or your child with instructions for the first week of school.  Your child will receive communication through Canvas. You will receive communication through the email provided in Skyward or your child’s Canvas inbox if you have set yourself up as an Observer.   The first week of school will include introductory lessons for online learning in each subject, course expectations, and the routine for synchronous learning.

For more information about how to stay involved and support your child with online learning, please watch the Online Learning Orientation.  The Online Learning Orientation will launch on August 24 and will provide detailed information about:

• Monitoring Your Child’s Progress in Canvas as an Observer
• Course Expectations--Attendance, Grades, District Testing Procedures, etc.
• Communication Procedures
• Accessing Support
