Weekly Bulletin

September 17 - September 21, 2018  |  Week 3

MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

Our shared value "passion with balance" is the theme for this second week of school. "Passion with Balance," means balancing your passion for your art with your schedule, your habits, and your strategy for wellness. There's a reason that the arts are referred to as "artistic disciplines." Each major requires self discipline, a commitment to daily practices and consistent, thoughtful choices. The same is true for your academics.

Students, by this second full week of school you should have a sense of the rhythm of your week and what you need to do to set yourself up for success. What are your organizational systems? When is your homework time each day (remembering schedules change during the week)? How are you making sure that you are getting enough rest? Graduates often tell me that the most important skill they gain at BAA is time management. If you are purposeful in your time management at the beginning of the semester, when midterms and honor roll assemblies come along, you will be happy with your results.

Here's what I expect to see:

What Passion with Balance looks like in classroom/studio/rehearsal space:

  • Preparation (be on time, do homework, practice skills, come with materials)
  • Consistency (continually holding self to high standards)
  • Punctuality
  • Following through
  • Refining

What Passion with Balance looks like beyond the classroom: hallways, shared spaces, Cleveland complex, in the neighborhood:

  • Being in the hall appropriately: with a pass, for a particular purpose, only during appropriate times
  • Maintaining school-appropriate volume in public spaces
  • Being mindful and respectful of CASH classes and activities
  • Being mindful and respectful of the Fields Corner neighbors

Remember, BAA is what we all make it.

Thank you, and have a great week!

CONGRATULATIONS AND SHOUT-OUTS

We are continuing the shout outs for students who went to art summer programs far and wide!

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS

Please also see the appropriate section below for information specific to your art major

*NEW* Auditions for MEMPHIS! Students interested in being in the musical at The Strand Theatre in January are invited to attend auditions.

Tuesday, September 18, 3-5pm - Singing Auditions, Room A-127

Wednesday, September 19, 3-5pm - Dance auditions, Room A-127

Thursday, September 20, 3-5:30pm - Acting Auditions, Room A-127

Students do not need to prepare for Acting Auditions or Dance Auditions. They will be given a script to read at the auditions. For the singing auditions, students should prepare any song that they feel shows their best voice. All students will sing acapella. Wear comfortable clothing and bare feet or socks for dance auditions.

There is much information on the internet about the show, which won the 2010 Tony Award! There is also video on Youtube.

IMPORTANT** Any student that has an H block class should attend class first, and come when released from class.

*Any student who cannot make an audition for religious reasons can be seen at callbacks the following week.

For questions please email Ms. Tighe: mtighe@bostonartsacademy.org.

*NEW* When we entered the Cleveland for this school year, we found a clean, mouse-free building. Let's keep it that way. We have had some concerns about bathrooms this week: We found writing on the wall in one bathroom, and we consistently found paper towels near, but not in, nearby waste baskets. That's middle school behavior and unacceptable at Boston Arts Academy. Please also remember to throw food away in the tall, gray trash cans rather than the short, brown trash cans.

EmersonWRITES is an urban, creative writing lab offering FREE college-style workshops to Boston students in grades 8 through 12. The HRC also provides a confidential space to talk to a trusted adult around topics including, but not limited to: sexual health, mental health, substance use, and decision making. We aim to connect youth to any services they need whether it be needing a space to work out issues with their loved ones or looking for potential employment. We are happy to announce that STI/STD testing services will be offered again this year. Testing is 100% free and confidential. All results and, if needed, treatments will only be handled by HRC staff and the Boston Public Health Commission. The HRC is located in the Health and Wellness office in room A-228B. As a reminder, the most common symptom amongst STI infections is no symptom at all. Getting tested is quick, easy, and accessible for you on Wednesdays and Thursdays!

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS, GUARDIANS, AND CAREGIVERS

Please also see the “SAVE THE DATES” section above for upcoming events, and the appropriate art section below for information specific to your student's art major

*NEW* We are excited to welcome families to our annual "Back to School Night" on Wednesday, September 26 from 6:00-7:45pm. This is a night where you will get information that connects to your student's major and your student's grade.

Traditionally, families have said that this evening is very helpful...but we want to make sure everyone understands that it's not the traditional "5 minutes in every classroom" Back-to-School Night. Families will go to two separate meetings, first by major and then by grade. Arts departments will make the major presentations, explaining how the arts curricula develop over four years at BAA. Administrators will make the grade-level presentations, providing an overview of academic curricula and assessments and answering any questions that you may have about the school in general. We will have more information about this night in the bulletin next week.

*NEW* For even more of a sense of what your student's life is like at Boston Arts Academy, we invite you to join us for Open House, Thursday, October 4 during the school day. That's a day where family members can shadow students and visit all of their classes. Many parents and caregivers tell us they wish they could have the Boston Arts Academy experience. October 4th is your chance!

*NEW* If your student would like or needs a vegetarian or a gluten-free BPS meal, please contact Ms. Clark at aclark@bostonartsacademy.org.

*NEW* The mobile eye clinic is coming back to BAA! In 2016, 20/20, an on-site eye doctor providing eye exams for students from a state-of-the-art mobile clinic, launched a pilot partnership to service the Boston Public School District with eye exams and free corrective eyewear. We are pleased to inform you that 20/20 will be coming back to Boston Arts Academy on Monday, October 22. Families who would like for their student to receive this service, please complete this consent form and return it to Nurse Jocelyne. The following services are provided from this mobile clinic:

  • A Complete Eye Exam
  • Electronic Prescription
  • Prescription Eyeglasses delivered to school
