Weekly Bulletin

February 25 - March 1, 2019  |  Week 24

MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

Our old building at Ipswich is almost completely gone, and the new one begins to go up next month. [Please see this picture to see the site at 174 Ipswich.] Needless to say, we are very excited about the final product that we will eventually see: a 500 seat theatre with a proscenium stage, balcony, and orchestra pit; state-of-the-art visual arts and fashion studios; four dance studios; the right number and kind of music spaces, including a recital hall; and a gym and fitness center.

But the process is also interesting. The architects for the project have worked with staff and students for over a year, planning, reviewing, and refining the final design. During intersession, a group of students and Mr. Binjour got a chance to "walk" through the new building in Virtual Reality. It was exciting to see our new school, but it was also exciting for the students to talk to the architects about the kind of technology they use to support their work. As the project unfolds, the architects will be doing more of these kinds of sessions so students can further understand the process. In the end, I think students will see it's an artistic/design project not unlike the work they do every day.

Welcome back from February vacation, and have a great week!

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

Do You Know Ann Cole Lowe or Ryan Coogler?

Ann Cole Lowe was “the first internationally-recognized African American fashion designer, who carved out a space for herself through talent alone in the Jim Crow-era United States. At 16, Ann's passion was tested when she was challenged to create four ball gowns for the First Lady of Alabama, Lizzie Kirkland O'Neal, an assignment her mother had taken on before suddenly passing. Ann made the dresses, and they served as her launching pad.” Her dresses and gowns were later sold in Neiman Marcus, Henri Bendel, and Saks, and she became the first Black designer to own a store on Madison Avenue in New York. And while she wasn’t credited at the time (due to the color of her skin), her most famous gown was that which she designed and created for Jackie Kennedy when she married John F. Kennedy. Film Director Ryan Coogler “gained attention and acclaim [in 2013] at the Sundance Film Festival with the release of his debut film Fruitvale Station. Now [...] the [32]-year-old is being hailed by IndieWire as a next-generation Steven Spielberg after the success of Black Panther, his third film, which brought in a record-breaking $235 million during its opening weekend. His relationship with the film's storyline dates back to his childhood in Oakland, California. He tells NPR that as a kid he often hung out at a comic book shop near his school where he was handed his first copy of Black Panther after inquiring about comic books with black people. At the time, Coogler had no idea that filmmaking would one day be his calling. He explains to Filmmaker Magazine that up until college he had aspirations to play football and become a doctor. As a student-athlete at Saint Mary's College, Coogler took a creative writing class in which he wrote about a time his father almost bled to death in his arms. Afterward, his professor called him into her office and asked what he wanted to do with his life. He explained that he wanted to be a doctor, but his professor convinced him to consider screenwriting instead.” Click here to learn more.
