St John’s Lutheran School “Charger Care” Handbook

Jennifer Adelmeyer, Director | 920-210-5284 | jadelmeyer@stjohnslomira.com

St John’s Lutheran School is providing “Charger Care”, an after-school care program, as a service to our school families. We recognize the challenges that working parents face with childcare arrangements and strive to provide options for our school families as an extension to our school’s mission statement:

St John’s Lutheran School partners with families to learn, grow, and share in Christ.

In keeping with that mission, our Charger Care program will follow the applicable policies and procedures as stated in the school handbook.

Charger Care Benefits

The children will be in a safe environment with direct supervision by an adult. They will be able to enjoy a snack brought from home from 3-3:15pm. They will receive supervised recreation time either in the gym (when it isn’t being used for practices or games) or outside (weather-permitting). They will receive time to work on homework, with access to adult help or have quiet reading time. Puzzles and games will also be available to the students when homework is done. No electronic devices will be allowed for students unless they need access to a Chromebook for homework purposes.

Enrollment Eligibility

Charger Care will be available for students of St John’s Lutheran School currently enrolled in grades 3K-8. Students enrolled in Charger Care will be automatically checked-in at 3pm and should immediately report to Charger Care after being dismissed by their classroom teacher.

Students staying after 3:15pm cannot do so unless they are enrolled in Charger Care, have permission from a teacher, or are under the direct supervision of a parent or coach.

Remember school dismisses at 3:00pm, so all students should be picked up no later than 3:15pm. Any students that have not been picked up by 3:15 will be taken to Charger Care and families will be charged. If this happens more than 3 times in a school year, they will need to be officially enrolled and pay the full enrollment fee.

Hours

Charger Care is available from 3:00pm-5:30pm the days school is in session. There will also be care available on early release days. However, for the safety of the teacher and children, there will not be care available if school releases early for bad weather/power outage. Please be prompt picking up your child. A 10-minute grace period is allowed and anyone picking up after 5:40pm will be charged an additional $1/minute late fee.

Check In and Out Process

Students enrolled in Charger Care should immediately report to Charger Care in the Commons area (during home volleyball and basketball games it will be held in a classroom) after being dismissed by their classroom teacher. Students will be checked in by the Charger Care teacher on the Gradelink app on the ipad. Parents need to ring the doorbell to come into the building to pick up their child and sign them out using the app on the ipad.

Cost and Billing

Charger Care charges a rate of $4/hr rounding to the nearest quarter hour. There is a $20/yr fee per family to enroll in Charger Care.

St John’s uses the Gradelink platform to track attendance, do the billing, and receive payments. They will need to link a checking or credit card account to it. There is a 50 cent convenience fee for electronic checks or a 4% convenience fee for credit cards. Invoices will be sent out at the beginning of the month and payments will be automatically withdrawn on the 10th of the month. If payment is returned for insufficient funds, payment is to be made in full including any bank fees incurred within 15 days. If payment hasn’t been received in full by that time (or arrangements made), the family may not utilize Charger Care until the matter has been rectified. There may also be a charge for the NSF.

Scheduling

Students may attend on a regularly set schedule or it may vary by week and/or month. Schedules or any changes to a schedule for the following week need to be turned in to the director Mrs. Adelmeyer, or the Charger Care teacher, no later than Friday.  When last-minute change of plans or emergencies arise, the director or Charger Care teacher should be notified no later than 9pm the night before. Any no-shows or late pick-ups without proper notification, may be charged an additional $5 scheduling fee.

If your child did not attend school or left early due to being ill, please notify the office as soon as possible. The scheduling fee will be waived due to illness. Please remember with a small program like ours, schedule changes can have a significant impact on the staff and other parents.

Staff

The Charger Care program will be staffed by an individual interviewed and hired by the director and principal, and Board of Education. Faculty members will be available to fill in when extra staff are needed or if the Charger Care teacher is unable to work. All workers will be 18 years or older and a member of a WELS/ELS congregation. A thorough background check will be performed on all staff members.

Below is a list of our current Little and Charger Care staff:

3K-4K: Miss Makayla Kaiser

Charger Care: Mary Lynn Schraufnagel, Denise Steffen, Devyn Zillmer, Sariah Dunn, and Michelle Leu

Conduct and Discipline

All students are expected to act in God-pleasing ways, showing kindness and respect for others. We do understand that all people are sinful and do act in inappropriate ways from time to time. We believe that we must lovingly guide and redirect the children to cooperate with their peers, while learning respect for others. We will not use discipline that is abusive, frightening, humiliating, or neglectful. If a student chooses to act in an inappropriate way, they will be asked to stop and be redirected to an appropriate activity. If the child continues the behavior, has or may cause harm to others, it is cause for immediate intervention. Parents will be notified and disciplinary action will be taken in connection with the St John’s Lutheran School discipline policy.
