Weekly Bulletin

September 10 - September 14, 2018  |  Week 2

MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

I want to congratulate our students on a very successful opening last week. More specifically, I want to compliment our students on their reaction to change. Change is a certain part of life: nothing stays the same forever. How we react to change is very important; when we are at our best, we allow change to help us grow. At BAA last week, I saw students who were a little unsettled by the newness: new year, for some a new school, for all a new building, some new members of our community, and new routines and norms. It is natural and expected that change will be initially unsettling. What's important is what happens after the initial reaction. I am proud of our BAA students who were open to possibilities and who were thinking about how to make the newness work for them and support their growth. I am also proud of the students who were supporting others. Special shout out to the student government e-board for their leadership gathering student reactions and concerns. Thank you for showing community with social responsibility.

Our shared value "community with social responsibility" is an important theme this first full week of school. I call upon students to set themselves, and our full community up, for a successful school year. Here's what I expect to see:

What Community with Social Responsibility looks like in classroom/studio/rehearsal space:

  • Participation and active engagement
  • Punctuality
  • Respectfulness
  • Courteousness
  • Focus
  • Everyone is taking a role, especially a leadership role, that matters
  • Collaboration
  • Appropriate electronics use only

What Community with Social Responsibility looks like beyond the classroom: hallways, shared spaces, Cleveland complex, in the neighborhood:

  • Committing to support the health of BAA’s community: participating in circles, advisories, and other school-wide community-building activities
  • Supporting others to make good choices
  • Making way for others in the hallway
  • Throwing away trash and recycling
  • Using school-appropriate language
  • Representing the BAA community well in shared areas of the Cleveland complex
  • Representing the BAA community well in the neighborhood

BAA is what we all, including students, make it. We have our community day activities and celebration at the end of the week on Friday. I look forward to celebrating a strong start.

Have a great week!

CONGRATULATIONS AND SHOUT-OUTS

We are continuing the shout outs for students who went to art summer programs far and wide! (If your name isn’t listed for a summer program, let Ms. Marsh know and we’ll shout you out in subsequent bulletins.)

Shout out to William Gordon (who, along with several other BAA students, attended Berklee’s Five-Week Summer Performance Program - check out some videos here!), and Ananda Toulon who attended the Snow Farm program.

Have someone(s) to congratulate or shout out? Please email Ms. Booth --> tbooth@bostonartsacademy.org (be sure to include name and reason for the shout out)

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS

Please also see the appropriate section below for information specific to your art major

On the first day of school, you received an important packet of forms that your family needed to complete and return the following day. If you haven’t yet returned your signed forms, please submit them to your advisor on Monday, September 10th. Be sure to have your parent/caregiver sign in all places that require a signature, otherwise forms will be returned to students and families for completion.

Summer Reading assignments are due on Tuesday, September 11 at the beginning of Seminar class. If you do not submit your summer reading assignment by the deadline, you will get a zero and may be required to attend a make-up session. Students who are required to attend a make-up session will be notified.

School doors will open every morning at 7:30am; breakfast will be served every morning.

If you get to school after 8:20am, please sign-in in the main office so you are not marked absent for the day. If you are absent, a note must be brought to the main office within 5 school days of the absence.

*UPDATED* Lockers: Locker assignments can be found in your ASPEN account starting on the first day of school. We are working on getting locker combinations up on ASPEN. Please stay tuned.

Schedule changes: Students’ schedules can be seen in students’ ASPEN accounts this week, but there may be changes before the first day of school. If you feel you are scheduled for the wrong class, you can request a schedule change with your advisor using the schedule change form. All schedule changes must be signed by the advisor, and turned into Ms. Bautista’s box for academic classes, and Ms. Marsh’s box for arts classes. You must continue to go to the class on your schedule until you receive a paper copy of the new schedule from Ms. Chourafa or you can see it on Aspen. Please note that no schedule changes are made because of teacher preference.

Roxbury Community College is still accepting applicants for their dual enrollment program (high school students taking college courses). Juniors and Seniors are eligible to apply to take free college-level courses outside of their BAA schedule. Please see the course catalogue here, and information about applying here. Classes started last week, so interested students should apply ASAP. Applications for spring/2nd semester dual enrollment courses will be due in December. Please direct questions to Ms. Bautista, Academic Dean, jbautista@bostonartsacademy.org.
