Weekly Bulletin

March 4 - March 8, 2019  |  Week 25

MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

Although we are just reaching midterms for Term 3, I want to suggest that it's time to start planning for summer. Summer is an excellent time to have an experience (with a job, in a summer arts program, through community service, in an internship, in a summer course) that supports students' post BAA plans. Several BAA students have had transformative experiences over their summer vacations that have literally changed the direction of their education and their lives. One student discovered through a summer program that he loved opera, and it changed where he decided to apply for college. Another had an internship that eventually led to a career. Rather than thinking of summer as "time off" from their education, I encourage students to think of the summer as a time that can be a crucial part of their learning and their growth.

In addition, most colleges now accept applications through something called the "Common Application," and there is a whole section in that application for activities, where students list what they do outside of classes both during the school year and during the summer. Students should be thinking of how they can build that part of their application, starting as underclassmen.

The City of Boston has two resources to help students with their summer plans. Students can register with SuccessLink for summer job opportunities from now until April 12 at Youth.Boston.gov. As the site explains: "Every summer, the City of Boston partners with hundreds of community-based and nonprofit organizations across the city to provide meaningful employment opportunities to thousands of Boston youth ages 15 to 18. Youth may have the opportunity to work in various positions that include sports specialists, choreographers, administrative assistants, mural painters, peer leaders and many more!"

The city is also having a youth job and resource fair at the Reggie Lewis Center on March 30 from 10am to 2pm. Students can download the flier here and then register with the QR code.

In our bulletin, starting next week until the end of the school year, additional summer opportunities will be catalogued in a link in our bulletin. There are lots of opportunities if you start planning now.

Have a great week!
