I want to serve on the Community Education Council of District 5 because I love District 5.

Click here to see some examples of work I have done.

I previously served as a member of the council in the 2017-19 term.  I am proud of how we collaborated as a council during that time, including initiating workshops for administrators about culturally responsive teaching.  In the current term I have served on several committees.  I helped with events to get community and youth input on school design and with analyzing school admission data. Alarmingly, we found that one of our middle schools was using a racially biased admissions process that resulted in only 13% of their seats going to students from our elementary schools when 25% had been promised. The council should continue to pressure the school to change their admissions policies.

From my years of experience advocating for D5, I understand how much the preferences of white people have held more sway in this district than the preferences of Black and Latinx people.  As a white person, I try to balance standing up to injustice with standing back to let other voices be louder than my own.

I want to end the white-supremacist policies that have led to underinvestment in and disempowerment of students and parents in our district.  I want to be a part of a team of parents demanding: reduced class sizes, more music, more libraries, accountability for charter schools, powerful school leadership teams, student representation on CEC5, and an end to both standardized testing and discriminatory enrollment practices. I am a member of citywide groups that advocate for education justice, including the Education Council Consortium and the Alliance for School Integration and Desegregation.  These collaborations will be important for advancing equity in D5. If elected, I will work to make the council worthy of your participation. I hope to see you at a council meeting soon.
