How to Gather Comments to Protect Wolves

Thank you for stepping up to protect wolves by joining our Call of the Wild campaign.

Right now we’re working to flood the Trump Administration with letters to make our message loud and clear: Wolves need federal protection across the United States.

We’ve also put together a video if you’d like inspiration and tips.

Here’s how you can collect comments in your community to protect wolves.

  1. Fill out this form to request a Call of the Wild outreach packet to receive the following materials or print your own materials with the links below.
  1. 100 comment letters;
  2. 25 fact sheets;
  3. 1 copy of this campaign backgrounder;
  4. 1 sample script with talking points;
  5. Spanish-language materials (optional);
  6. 2 addressed envelopes to send your comments back to us in batches of 50.
  1. Decide when and where you’ll do outreach.
  1. Talk to your neighbors, friends and family. Go to a community event, coffee shop, grocery store, library, pet store, church, farmers market, college campus or any area with foot traffic.
  2. If you want company, fill out this quick form and we’ll invite other Ignite Change volunteers near you to join.
  1. Go collect comments.
  1. Grab a clipboard, pens and the materials in your outreach packet, and hit the streets! This is a great way to engage new people, get the word out, and help build political pressure to protect wolves.
  2. If you’re setting up a table somewhere, here are some printable posters you can display.
  3. It’s best to keep your pitch very short and simple, so here are a sample script and additional talking points.
  4. Make sure to encourage people to add a personal comment in the blank space provided and/or on the back. This makes a big difference!
  1. Make sure contact info and any comments are LEGIBLE!
  1. Please consider taking photos and videos of your outreach efforts and sending them to us at ignite@biologicaldiveristy.org. We may use these photos in other outreach such as social media and other media outlets.
  1. Enter your data (optional)
  1. If you have a chance, please enter your own comment cards into Excel or Google Sheets before mailing them back to us. Please see detailed instructions at the bottom of this document.
  1. Mail comments back to us.
  1. Get your comments postmarked & in the mail BY JULY 1 to: Ignite Change, 378 N Main Ave., Tucson, AZ 85701. Please make sure to include your name and address on EVERY return envelope.
  2. We will consolidate all comments & deliver them to U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as part of the official comment period on their wolf delisting proposal.
  3. Feel free to send back chunks of completed cards as you have them. We’ve included two envelopes so you can mail back in batches of 50 — or as close to that as you can get.
  4. If you are opting to do your own data entry, please include a note in the envelope saying the data has already been entered and submitted when you return your comment cards to us in the mail.

Bonus Resources:

  1. Online outreach
  1. Here is also an online comment letter to spread far and wide through your digital networks for them to submit their thoughts.
  2. See our “online outreach guide” for more info on how to amplify the cause.
  1. Kids outreach!
  1. This is a perfect issue to engage kids on! Here is a comment letter specifically designed for kids to fill out and write or draw their own message. You can print out masks from this link and have kids take photos and maybe even take one home.

Entering Your Data Before Mailing Cards Back (Optional):

If you’re able to, it’s a huge help if you can enter the data from your comment cards. This is an important task because it allows us to continue to expand our audience and invite people who care about wolves to take the next step in the fight to save them. Please note that we do not share lists with any other organizations and that people who are added can unsubscribe at any time. To do data entry, you have to be proficient at using Excel or Google Sheets.

Here are the steps:

  1. Create a new spreadsheet in Excel or make a copy of this template in Google Sheets, using these exact column headers:
  • If you’re using Google Sheets, click on this link, then under “File” select “Make a copy.” You will then be asked to name your Sheet file. Enter YOUR FULL NAME.
  • If you’re using Excel, open a New file, select “Blank spreadsheet”, then use each of these titles for the top of each separate column (in this order). Save the Excel as YOUR FULL NAME

First Name

Last Name

City

Zip

Email

Phone

Collector's Full Name

Collector's State

  1. Gather your comment cards together and begin entering the information.
  2. If any of the information is illegible or not present, just leave that cell BLANK instead of “?” or “N/A”, but try your best to guess the handwriting.
  • The email address is how we track people in our database, so please pay particular attention to that field.
  • Please enter phone numbers as a consecutive string of 10-digits, with no dash or periods in between. Example: 1234566789 NOT 123-456-6789 or 123.456.6789
  1. Once you’ve completed your data entry, please email the Excel file (“Save as” YOUR FULL NAME and either .xls or .csv file) as an attachment or share the editable Google sheet link (URL) to data-entry@biologicaldiversity.org.
  • If you are using Google Sheets, Please Share the spreadsheet instead of attaching it, using this green button up at the top right of your spreadsheet:

  1. When you return your comment cards to us in the mail, please include a note in the envelope saying your data has already been entered and emailed to us.

And remember, make sure all the cards are in the mail by July 1 so they can be included in our delivery to the Trump administration.

THANK YOU!
