Letter to NYU Students
from the undersigned members of the Faculty of Color Caucus
and other members of the Faculty at Large, New York University
14 November 2016
Dear NYU Students,
We are writing in the days following the presidential election in the U.S. to express our support for all of our students, and especially for those of you who feel particularly vulnerable as we begin to contemplate the implications of this election for undocumented students, people of color, women, Native Americans, immigrants, LGBTQ people, Muslims, Jews, and people with disabilities.
As members of an academic community that values the free and open exchange of ideas, we are concerned that the violence, intimidation and exclusion expressed by the person elected to the highest office in the U.S has been given new life in both international and national discourse, and in our own halls of learning. Many of us have heard from students who feel physically and psychically unsafe because they are black or brown or yellow, or female, or queer, from survivors of sexual assault, and from undocumented students who fear for their security. We want you to know that we hear you and care for you, and that our doors are open to you.
We are committed to doing everything in our power toward making our campuses spaces of safety and freedom. Sometime in the night on Tuesday, Nov. 8 the door of the Muslim Students Association at the Tandon School of Engineering was vandalized with the word “Trump.” This kind of intimidation is unacceptable in our community. We support our Muslim students, and urge the university administration to condemn and publicly acknowledge this act of hate speech, and to protect all students at the University.
We recognize, with grief, that we cannot ensure your safety, but we stand with you as teachers, colleagues, mentors, and friends. We pledge to work with you to support the networks of care, activism, education, and creation we know you are already building and organizing, and which we urgently need.
Sincerely,
We, the undersigned members of the Faculty of Color Caucus, and other members of the Faculty at Large, New York University
