Kevin Fitzsimmons, Ph.D., Moderator, Chair of the F3 Challenge and Judge, Professor and Director of International Programs at The University of Arizona: Fitzsimmons has devoted the last 40 years to improving the sustainability of aquaculture in Arizona, across the U.S. and globally in over 80 countries. This work has included polyculture systems, integrated farming systems irrigating field crops and hydroponics and alternative protein sources to make diets more sustainable. Fitzsimmons served as the President of the U.S. and World Aquaculture Societies and was the second Chairman of the global charity, Aquaculture Without Frontiers. He received a Fulbright Fellowship in 2004 to teach and conduct research in Thailand and is working on a second Fulbright Fellowship in Myanmar, where he is finishing a 3-year USAID project supporting aquaculture. | |

Moderator for Sessions #10 & #12: Christopher Oakes, Head of Strategic Partnerships in Agriculture, Deep Science Ventures: Chris holds a B.A. and M.A. in Marine Biology from Occidental College in Los Angeles and has dedicated his career to developing regenerative ocean technologies using biotechnology. Before joining DSV Chris was the Vice President of Product and Market Development at NovoNutrients, where his role focused on interfacing with potential customers and their novel aquafeed ingredient needs and translating that into product development roadmaps. He has worked on ocean systems more broadly and has wide-ranging and applied understanding of synthetic biology. Chris also is a Board Member at the non-profit MARE, where he contributes to fisheries and Marine Protected Area management efforts in California. |

In 2009, Kees founded Protix to create a more sustainable food system that is able to feed the growing world population with an eye for and conservation of the earth's natural resources. Protix has received various prizes and awards in recent years, including the Technology Pioneer award by the World Economic Forum. Kees is also a member of the board of directors of smartparks.org and is a member of the World Economic Forum for food security and agriculture. He received an MSc degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Delft. | |
Patrick Crowley, CEO, Chapul Farms: With a Masters in Watershed Hydrology and background in climate modeling, Pat founded Chapul to reverse engineer the sustainable benefits of insect agriculture, by developing a pull-through market demand. Chapul launched in 2012 with an oversubscribed crowdfunding campaign in an attempt to directly address consumer perceptions regarding novel insect protein. Since then, Chapul has pioneered many new market segments for insect products and in 2020 he launched Chapul Farms to build and scale modular insect farms to close the loop between organics waste management and animal feed markets. | |

Nick Piggott, CEO & Co-Founder, Nutrition Technologies: Nutrition Technologies is an industrial-scale BSF manufacturer based in South East Asia. Nick became acutely aware of the challenges of food security whilst working for the UN in West Africa, and the company has since developed insect-based feed-ingredients for the livestock and aquaculture industries to address this issue. Lukas Manomaitis, Aquaculture Program Technical Contractor, USSEC: Lukas has worked with USSEC since 2002 on programs internationally and has been involved in expanding the USSEC Aquaculture Program from China to a global program in 2002, in the expansion of the In-Pond Raceway System technology from China to a global program starting in 2015, and conceptualized and help create the International Aquaculture Feed Formulation Database (IAFFD). He holds degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and Auburn University. He is based in Thailand but travels often in the Southeast Asian region and regularly to global regions for USSEC. | |

Larry Feinberg, CEO, KnipBio: Larry Feinberg, PhD. is an entrepreneurial industrial biotechnologist and the CEO and co-founder of KnipBio. He has expertise in early-stage technology ventures, bio-product discovery and large-scale commercialization initiatives. With the advanced biofuel technology firm Mascoma Corporation, Larry held leadership responsibilities in scientific discovery and business development roles. Spearheading the Organism Discovery group, Larry oversaw bioprospecting and strain development duties. Leading the New Business Opportunities team, he was responsible for multiple commercial candidates including the development of the cellulosic ethanol biorefinery initiative in Alberta, Canada which he directed from concept through advanced engineering. In total, Larry co-authored and received greater than $80MM of Canadian government investment through three separate awards. Larry’s technical training occurred at the University of Massachusetts where he obtained his PhD through his studies of the biogeochemistry, physiology and genetics of hyperthermophile microbes living in extreme environments. Some of the ecologies he has sampled include approximately 20 different hot springs, landfills, agricultural compost piles and industrial facilities. Allan LeBlanc, Vice President Market Development, Calysta: Allan LeBlanc was named Vice President Aquaculture in 2020. He joined Calysta in 2013 as Director of Corporate Development and served as FeedKind Product Manager from 2015 through 2019. David Tze, CEO, NovoNutrients: In 2017, David became CEO of NovoNutrients. He invested in it, pivoted it, and led it through the IndieBio accelerator. NovoNutrients transforms CO2 emissions into food and feed alternative protein ingredients, through natural microbes and industrial biotech. Since 2004, David has launched and managed the Aquacopia fund, a five-company, seed-stage portfolio focused on aquaculture and nutrition. The companies ranged from a protein ingredient manufacturer to a distributor and marketer of sustainable seafood. The fund also led investments into Open Blue, InnovaSea, and Futuna. Including a prior start-up that David co-founded, those six companies raised $250 million. Bill Cramer, President, Star Milling: Bill Cramer is a third generation farmer and feed manufacturer, following his father and grandfather in the commercial production of chickens, eggs and animal feeds. Cramer graduated from Claremont McKenna College in 1975 with a B.A degree in Economics and Accounting. Following graduation he operated his own farms for the production of replacement pullets and table eggs, later joining his father at Star Milling Co. in 1985. Through the purchase of the stock of his father’s partner and later his father’s stock, Cramer is the sole owner of Star Milling Co. Cramer has been married to his wife Janet for 44 years with two grown children and four grandchildren. His son Paul is now the fourth generation in the family business. | |
Vegard Denstadli, Ph.D., Technical Director from the Salmon Division, BioMar Norway: Vegard Denstadli is the Technical Director in Norway within the Salmon Division of BioMar Group, a Danish global feed company that produces aquaculture feeds for 45 different fish and shrimp species for more than 80 countries. Vegard holds a PhD in Fish Nutrition from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and spent a decade in research before starting his commercial career in BioMar in the Global R&D team and now with the technical team. He has been involved with the transformation of salmon feeds with the adoption of breakthrough innovations including creating the first feeds with micro-algae as a substitute to marine resources. Lindsay Pollock, Ph.D., Sustainability Manager for Cargill Aqua Nutrition, North Sea; Cargill: Lindsay Pollock has worked in the aquafeed sector since 2007 and has held the role of Sustainability Manager for Cargill Aqua Nutrition, North Sea since 2019. At Cargill Aqua Nutrition she is closely engaged with salmon farming customers on a range of sustainability issues, including sustainable raw material sourcing, certification, LCA and driving reductions in the environmental impacts of salmon feed and farming. She is supporting delivery of Cargill Aqua Nutrition’s major new sustainability programme - SeaFurther™ Sustainability, which set the goal of reducing the environmental footprint of salmon farming by 30% by 2030. | |
Jesse Trushenski, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer, Riverence: Dr. Jesse Trushenski is a fisheries scientist with specific interests in conservation and commercial aquaculture. She is the Chief Science Officer and Vice President for Animal Welfare for Riverence, the largest producer of farmed Rainbow Trout and Steelhead in the Americas with operations based in Washington and Idaho. Riverence also produces premium Rainbow Trout genetics and is the only commercial supplier of Atlantic Salmon and Coho Salmon eggs located in the USA. Jesse manages Riverence’s R&D portfolio and provides executive-level science leadership across the company’s operations. Erwin Suwendi, Head of Nutrition and Feed Technology, PT Suri Tani, Pemuka (STP), Aquaculture Division of JAPFA Group: Erwin Suwendi is Head of Nutrition and Feed Technology at Aquaculture Division of JAPFA Group, one of the leading agri-food companies in Asia. Based in HQ-Jakarta, he currently leads nutrition-formulation working on major freshwater fish, marine fish and shrimp. Robins McIntosh, Executive Vice President, Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company: Mr. McIntosh joined C.P. Foods PCL. (CPF) since December 2001 with the responsibility of revitalizing the CPF’s shrimp culture activities through introduction of sustainable and environmentally sound technologies to the company and Thailand. Mr. McIntosh has been associated with international shrimp farming and technology development since 1978, having worked in Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, Myanmar, India, Philippines and Thailand. He is most often associated with the development of domesticated high health shrimp, and the development of closed system, zero water exchange shrimp culture systems. Currently he is involved in finding solutions to the shrimp EMS crisis in Asia. | |
Ewen McLean, Ph.D., Consultant, Aqua Cognoscenti and F3: Dr. Ewen McLean has over 30 years’ experience in aquaculture and fisheries. He has held positions as Research Leader, Department Chair, and Program Professor and has mentored over 40 graduate students. With over 200 publications, he has focused attention on issues surrounding aquaculture sustainability. He has contributed to the authoring of national and international guidelines on environmental monitoring for aquaculture and has co-organized several regional, national and international symposia. Loc Tran, Ph.D., Founder and Director, Minh Phu AquaMekong Co., Ltd.: Dr. Loc Tran is the founder and director of ShrimpVet Laboratory in Vietnam. He leads a team of more than 70 researchers in shrimp health management, focusing on genetics, breed, seed production, diagnostics and disease management, and farm techniques and management. He received his Ph.D. in Aquaculture Pathology from the University of Arizona, where he studied under Dr. Kevin Fitzsimmons and Dr. Donald Lightner, the two renowned aquaculture experts. While working as a research assistant at the University of Arizona, Dr. Loc was instrumental in the identification of EMS and development of diagnostic tools used for on farm management. The ShrimpVet lab provides diagnostics and research services across the shrimp production value chain including genetics, seed production, nursery, grow out, nutrition, disease control etc. It becomes a hub for laboratory testing, applied science, and public education for sustainable aquaculture. | |

Paul Wills, Ph.D. Research Professor and Associate Director for Research, Florida Atlantic University - Harbor Branch Oceanographic Research Institute: Paul S. Wills received his B.S. degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1987. He completed his M.S and Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1991 and 1998 respectively. After finishing his postdoc appointment at SIU studying methods for the production of all-female trophy muskellunge, he took a job with private industry operating a large fish farm that specializes in freshwater sportfish fingerling production for inland fisheries management. Dr. Wills joined HBOI-FAU in 2006, where he is now a Research Professor and the Associate Director for Research. His primary areas of research include fish production, new species development, and land-based aquaculture system design. He has worked on aquaculture of a large number of species during his career, including many species of marine and freshwater food fish and sportfish, and even crawfish. He has authored or co-authored 59 articles (peer-reviewed, proceedings and industry press), 99 conference presentations, 11 conference posters, and so far has one patent with other patents pending. | |

Anthony Dellinger, Ph.D., President and Founding Member, Kepley BioSystems, Inc.: A nanoscientist, entrepreneur and inventor, Dr. Dellinger has had an esteemed career that includes leadership positions in enterprise, instructional positions in academia, and led multiple grant programs funded by the federal government. Prior to forming KBI in 2014, he graduated from the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) earning a PhD in Nanoscience. In 2015, he was named the inaugural Entrepreneur of the Year for 2015 at his alma mater. Dellinger is dedicated to improving public, societal, ecological, and economic outcomes through research, inventorship and enterprise. He has led multiple National Science Foundation SBIR grants and applied his academic publishing philosophy to enterprise development. Dellinger holds three patents and has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific publications across scientific disciplines. In previous work, he helped develop a sustainable solution for the fishing industry using chemoattractant molecules to replace forage fish. More recently his team has focused on creating an aquaculture and nutritional framework for husbandry of the Atlantic horseshoe crabs. Dellinger is a board member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Horseshoe Crab Species Specialist Group and has served as a special topic’s editor for Frontiers Journal of Marine Science and JoVE for emerging and sustainable oceanic research. In 2020, Dellinger was selected as a TEDx speaker and presented his company’s horseshoe crab research, future vision, and philosophies. Yisheng Wu, Ph.D., Senior Director, Conagen: Dr. Wu manages the flavor, fragrance and cosmetics ingredients portfolios at Conagen and leads R&D in strain engineering as well as commercialization of ingredients involving legal, regulatory, pilot plant, marketing, and manufacturing teams. Dr. Wu has been with Conagen since 2013 and has filled multiple roles during her time with the company. She obtained a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Iowa State University in 2012. | |

Dave Robb, Ph.D., Program Lead, SeaFurther™ Sustainability, Cargill Aqua Nutrition Business, Cargill: Dave Robb is the Program Lead for SeaFurther™, the signature sustainability initiative of Cargill Aqua Nutrition. With over 20 years’ experience in aqua feeds business, his experience spans across a broad range of issues, from supply chains and feed production, to how feeds can enable more sustainable farming. SeaFurther focuses on reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with our customers’ farming activities, also supporting development across a broad range of other topics related to sustainability. Robb also works on fishery improvement programs to develop more sustainable marine ingredients and with broad supply chains to advance aqua nutrition with greater systemic resilience. | |
Jose Villalon, Corporate Sustainability Director, Nutreco: Jose Villalon is Corporate Sustainability Director at Nutreco, based in The Netherlands. Born in Cuba and raised in the USA, Jose received his Master of Science degree at the University of Washington. He was a commercial shrimp farmer for 27-years in the Virgin Islands, Ecuador and Mexico. He then joined the World Wildlife Fund (WWF-US) and led its’ Aquaculture Program for six years. During that time, Jose managed the creation of environmental/social industry standards through the Aquaculture Dialogues. Along with WWF and IDH, they co-founded the independent Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). For the last nine years he has led Nutreco’s global sustainability strategy. | |
Kyla Zatti, Ph.D., Scientist - Nutrition Formulation R&D, BioMar: Kyla Zatti is a Scientist leading the Sustainable Nutrition and Raw Material pipeline within BioMar’s R&D department. BioMar is a Danish global feed company that produces aquaculture feeds for more than 45 different fish and shrimp species in more than 90 countries. Kyla holds a Ph.D. in Animal Science from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada where she specialized in aquaculture. She has spent 15 years working in aquaculture research with six of those being within the industry. She has been involved with the transformation of salmon feeds with the adoption of breakthrough innovations including creating the first feeds with micro-algae as a substitute for marine resources. BioMar continues this innovation journey with its recent launch of Blue Impact feeds that reduce the carbon footprint and forage-fish-dependency-ratio while increasing the use of restorative and circular ingredients. But the story is not over as Kyla and the R&D team continue with research projects to push the minimum impact boundaries even further. |
