2016 Summer Camps: Welcome to Villanova University

Dear Parent and Students!

We are so excited to have you join us for our summer camp at Villanova.  We are happy to provide you with the following information specific to your camp. Please read over this information carefully and be sure to note in your personal calendars the dates and times that you will need to be at the campus for opening day, orientation, pick up, drop off, or closing day activities. This information can always be found on our Summer Camp Attendee Information Page on our website.

  1. Important Dates & Times
  1. The first day of camp is Sunday, July 3rd. Camp check in will be between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.. If you are a residential camper, you’ll want to arrive as close to 1:00 p.m. as possible so you can set up your dorm room. If you are a commuter camper, you’ll want to arrive close to 2:15 p.m. Parking will be available at CEER Lot (full name: Center for Engineering Education and Research) and you’ll meet the Capitol Debate staff for check in at  Fedigan Hall.

  1. Commuter campers can be picked up in front of Fedigan Hall at 8:00 p.m. at the end of the first day.

 

  1. Commuters
  1. Commuter Drop off will be at 8:30 a.m. every morning in front of Fedigan Hall with the exception of Sunday, July 10th. On this day students will be allowed to sleep in and check in at 12:45 p.m.
  2. Commuter Pick up will be every evening at 8:00 p.m. in front of Fedigan Hall. The only days this may change will be on Tuesday, July 5th and Thursday, July 7th  as we will be off campus on a field trip.  We will do our best to make sure students return to campus on time but in case of traffic or inclement weather please send your students with a cell phone or your phone number so that we can contact you if we will be late.
  1. Parent Orientation
  1. Parent Orientation will take place on Sunday, July, 3rd at 3:30 p.m. in the Connelly Center Cinema. Students will participate in Ice Breakers with residential staff at this time.  This is a great opportunity for our parents to meet the staff and ask questions as well.
  1. Last Day of Camp

  1. Dorms and Life
  1. During camp, we will house our students in the wonderful Fedigan Hall dormitory.
  2. Fedigan Hall is set up in a traditional style. Each room with have two (2)  students in each spacious room and their bathrooms will be located at both ends of each floor’s hall.
  3. The dorm rooms will have air conditioning so you do not need to bring a fan.  
  4. For a great camp experience, here are the things that each student needs to bring!
  1. All Students
  1. Flash drive.
  2. 8.5 x 14 Unlined Legal paper. Much like your regular unlined printer/copy paper, but longer. Please purchase reams and not the legal notebook.
  3. 2 different color pens. Bring many in case they get lost!
  4. One subject notebook. 
  5. A laptop. A MAC with OSX 10.8 or above, or a PC with Windows 7 or newer, or any version of a Chromebook. It must also have wireless internet capability. Tablets will not be sufficient.
  6. A digital kitchen timer that counts up or down in seconds.
  7. Recreational and comfortable clothing! We will do lots of walking, playing, and sports during our free time. Please bring casual sports wear, sneakers, shorts, etc.
  8. Lightweight jackets or sweater if it gets chilly in class or in case of rain.
  9. Sunglasses, sunscreen, swimwear
  10. Spending money! Our students usually spend their money on the following: a campus store and vending machines (if available), off campus meals (which are not paid for by Capitol Debate), and souvenirs during our amazing field trips! If your student is travelling alone, please make sure they have enough money to pay for their transportation!
  1. Residential Only:
  1. Extra Long Twin sheets - These sheets are easily found at Target, Walmart, etc in the “dorm sections”. They are longer than regular sheets.  It might get chilly at night, so don’t forget a blanket!

  3. Toiletries
  1. Towel, bath shoes/ rubber sandals, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, gender specific items, shampoo, shower gel, and any toiletries that are important to you on a daily basis!  
  1. Laundry supplies - dryer sheet and laundry detergent. We find pods (like Tide Pods) to be a great option. Laundry will cost $1 per wash or dry.

  1. Special Camp Events - Brian Fish
  1. Ice Cream Social - All of our students will be participating in an Ice Cream Social Ice Breaker on Monday, July 4th after dinner to get to know eachother better!
  2. Movie - We will be watching a movie on campus for all of the kids enjoyment on Saturday, July 9th.
  3. Weekly Activities: On Wednesday, July 6th and Tuesday, July 12th, our Residential Life staff will lead the kids through fun outdoor and/or indoor activities after dinner. Be sure to bring recreational, comfortable clothing and a swimsuit.
  4. Field Tips:
  1. We’re excited to see My Big Friendly Giant on Tuesday, July 5th! We will leave campus at 5pm for the United Artists King of Prussia Theatre. 
  2. On Thursday, July 7th, we’ll be visiting Dorney Park!
  1. Field Day -  On Sunday, July 10th, the kids have a field day on campus with lots of fun activities planned so make sure to bring some recreational clothing and a pair of shoes to run in!
  2. Talent Show - What better way for the kids to continue the fun than a Talent Show on Sunday, July 10th! Make sure to brings something to show off your amazing talents!
  3. Demonstration Debates - On the last day of camp, Friday, July 15th, we will be holding our Student Showcase debates for all of the parents to enjoy and see how far your students have progressed so make sure you arrive by 8:30 a.m. for our debates starting at 9:00 a.m.!
