Overview of League Organization
This is a handicapped league with weekly matches. In the round robin format, each player gets to play a match against a different opponent every week. Players compete for ranking points, which are earned by showing up for matches (and more are earned by winning frames!). At the end of the season, awards are given out to the top ranked players. The handicapping system helps to equalize the skill factor so that everyone has a chance to become a top ranked player.
Results for season 1 of the league can be found here: http://www.casnooker.com/leagueSeason1.html
Entry Fee / How to Enter
The entry fee for the league is $30, which will be charged to your CA Snooker account when the league begins. You can also submit the fee in person as a cash payment, or send using Paypal to billing@casnooker.com. Hourly members will receive a 25% discount from table time charges during their matches.
You must be a member of CA Snooker in order to join the league (if you are not a member, you can contact Sam / Ajeya at info@casnooker.com for information on how to sign up).
League Night
League night is Tuesdays at 7-10pm starting December 13th. Depending on the number of entries, players may be split up into groups and another league night will be designated for the 2nd group. It is not necessary to show up for every single league night, as long as you have finished all your matches by the end of the league season. You also have the option of scheduling league matches independently with your opponents to be played at any day/time you wish, if you cannot attend league night for whatever reason.
You can play any opponent in any order you wish, based on whoever shows up on league night. You can keep track of all your matches and ranking points by visiting the league page at www.casnooker.com (see CAS Season 1 for an example). You can play more than one match per league night, as long as other league players are not waiting.
Awards
First, second, and third place ranked players will receive trophies, as well as a permanent gold, silver, or bronze medal icon next to their name when logging in at the club (for some nice bragging rights!) The top ranked player will also have their name engraved on the league plaque which will be displayed inside the CA Snooker facility.

Match Format
Each match consists of 2 frames. Therefore it is possible to end a match in a tie. Handicap points are automatically set by the system when players start their match (see below).
How Handicaps Are Determined
Handicaps are given as points to start in each frame. The number of points is determined by the difference in the “CAS Rating” of the two players. The league system automatically adjusts each player’s rating after each match. Ratings are not adjusted in the case of a tie.
Players will be assigned an initial “CAS Rating” based on the judgement of the league operators as to the player’s skill level. This is based on several factors, including past results in other tournaments and leagues. The handicap system is designed to give all players an equal chance of winning over the long run, regardless of their initial rating. Therefore, any inaccuracy in the initial rating determination should even out as more matches are played. The league operators reserve the right to manually adjust a player’s rating in the interest of fairness to all players, in case the initial rating was inaccurate.
League Ranking Points
Over the course of the season, players will be ranked by the number of points they have accumulated. The points system works as follows:
Tie-breaking
If the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd ranked players are tied for points at the end of the league season, the players who are tied will play a best of 3 match to determine the final ranking. (If 3 or more players are tied, they will play in a round-robin format).
Rules of Play
Differences Between League Rules and Standard Snooker Rules
Standard WPBSA snooker rules are to be used during a match. However, since matches are not refereed, the “miss” rule does not apply. Instead, in the case of a foul, the opponent may choose to have the player who fouled play again from where the balls lie. All other standard rules for fouls should be used.
Etiquette
As a courtesy, the player is responsible for respotting balls and counting points during their opponent’s turn.
Players should strongly consider conceding a frame when 3 or more snookers are required to win, especially if other players are waiting to play.
All players are expected to play fairly and within the spirit of the game. If you feel your opponent is not playing fairly, please let Sam or Ajeya know.
Practice Time
Players are allowed 2-3 minutes of “warm up” time each before starting their match.
Addendum: Handicap System
As described above, players are assigned an initial “CAS Rating”. After each match, the rating adjusts automatically. The rating goes up by 10 points for a win, down by 10 points for a loss. The rating remains unchanged in the case of a tie.
The difference between two players’ CAS Ratings determines the starting points given to the lower rated player, according to the following table:
Rating Difference | Starting Points Given |
0 - 19 | 0 |
20 - 34 | 8 |
35 - 51 | 16 |
