Ein offener Brief an die GCM Go City Media GmbH, die Redaktion von Zitty und den Comic-Autor Hannes Richert:

Wir finden es nicht lustig. Der Comic mit dem Titel „Keine Shotz", veröffentlicht in der neuesten Ausgabe von Zitty „Das Kita Chaos" vom 8.-14. Dezember 2016, ist weder lustig, satirisch, sarkastisch, noch gesellschaftskritisch. Es repräsentiert die Normalisierung von Misogynie und Rassismus, die nicht nur für Frauen und People of Color sehr problematisch und unakzeptabel sind, sondern auch für die gesamte Gesellschaft. Wir finden es nicht lustig, dass zwei weiße Charaktere Begriffe benutzen, die für Frauen und People of Color abträglich und beleidigend sind. Wir werden die saloppe Verwendung entwürdigender und rassistischer Sprache nicht akzeptieren. Dieser spezielle Comic ist nicht in alltäglicher deutscher Kultur oder Umgangssprache basiert. Der „Witz“, der daraus besteht, dass die Charaktere „amerikanische“ Umgangssprache verwenden, ignoriert die Tatsache, dass die Verwendung dieser Sprache seit über einem Jahrzehnt als inakzeptabel gilt. Sie ist frauenfeindlich und rassistisch.

Wir finden es nicht lustig, dass eine aus drei Mitgliedern bestehende Chefredaktion diesen Comic absichtlich übersehen hat oder ihn gar witzig und harmlos genug fanden, um ihn zu veröffentlichen. Wir finden dies umso abstoßender, da Zittys Schwesterpublikation „Tip” in der Ausgabe 21/2016 vom 6.-19. Dezember 2016 das Titelthema „Rassismus: Vom kolonialen Erbe bis zur AfD: Warum die Debatte gerade erst richtig losgeht” mit einem Titelbild von Isaiah Lopez Anti-Rassismus Projekt „Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Him” heraus gebracht hat. Wie kann es sein, dass eine GCM Go City Media GmbH Publikation sich mit Rassismus auseinandersetzt, während die Andere Rassismus und Misogynie reproduziert und fördert?

Erst letzten Monat wurde ein Schwarzer Teenager in Prenzlauer Berg attackiert und im Oktober wurde eine Frau ohne jeglichen Grund an der U-Bahn Hermannstraße angegriffen. Medienberichte wie diese sind Teil der Kultur, die Gewalt und Diskriminierung gegenüber Frauen und People of Color in der Gesellschaft dulden. Repressive Sprache außerhalb von Wissenschaft und Sozialkritik ist äußerst unangemessen. Und nein, dies ist keine Doppelmoral. Die Bedeutung und den Effekt von Sprache ergibt sich immer in Relation zu den Personen, die die Sprache nutzen. Die Zitty Redaktion und Hannes Richert haben das Privileg abfällige und rassistische Sprache salopp zu verwenden ohne als Frauen oder People of Color die Auswirkungen einer diskriminierenden Gesellschaft zu erleben. Die Produktion und Veröffentlichung des Comics ist eine Verunglimpfung der gelebten Erfahrungen von Frauen und People of Color in Berlin.

Die unterzeichnete Forderung ist das die GCM Go City Media GmbH, die Redaktion von Zitty und der Comic-Autor Hannes Richert eine öffentliche Entschuldigen herausgeben. Bis dahin, werden wir GCM Go City Media GmbH und all ihre Publikationen boykottieren.

An Open Letter to GCM Go City Media GmbH, the editorial board of Zitty and the Comic Author Hannes Richert:

We are not amused. The comic entitled “Keine Shotz” published in the latest issue of Zitty “Das Kita Chaos” December 8-14, 2016 is neither funny, nor satire, nor sarcasm, nor a critique on society. It is a representation of the normalization of misogyny and racism which is not only problematic and unacceptable to both women and people of color. But also society at large. We don’t find it funny that two white characters without recourse would use words that are harmful and insulting to both women and people of color. We will not stand for the casual use of derogatory and racist speech. This particular comic has no roots in a culture or vernacular that is commonplace to Germans or Germany. And the “joke” of depicting characters using “American” slang, disregards that fact that these words and usages, for over more than a decade, are not considered appropriate. They are misogynistic and racist.

We are not amused that a head editorial staff of three members decidedly overlooked or found this comic harmless enough to publish. We find this even more disarming considering Zitty’s sister publication Tip, for it’s 21/2016 issue (October 6th - 19th) published a cover story “Rassismus: Vom kolonialen Erbe bis zur AfD: Warum die Debatte gerade erst richtig losgeht.” with the cover image being one of the works from Isaiah Lopez’s project about racism and anti-blackness “Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Him.” How is that one of your publications is looking specifically to delve into the issues of race, while another chooses to publish something misogynist and racist?

Just at the end of last month, a black teenager was attacked in Prenzlauerberg and in October a woman was attacked at U-bahn Hermannstrasse for no apparent reason. Media representations such as this one, is part of the culture that condones violence and discrimination against women and people of color in society. Oppressive language in a context outside of academia and critique is wildly inappropriate. And no, there is no double standard. The meaning and impact of words are always determined by the relationships of the people to those words. The editorial board of Zitty and Hannes Richert have the privilege to casually fling derogatory and racist speech around and not reap the repercussions of being a woman or person of color in an oppressive nation. Their blatant oversight in producing and publishing this comic speaks directly to the denigration of the lived experiences of both women and people of color in Berlin.

The undersigned demand that GCM Go City Media GmbH, the editorial board of Zitty and the Comic Author Hannes Richert issue a public apology. Until then, we will be boycotting GCM Go City Media GmbH and all of their publications.
