MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

Wednesday of this week is Community Service Day, an important experience for our community and an important tradition at Boston Arts Academy. We have many purposes for this day. Community service is part of our mission as a school. Artist-Scholar-Citizens who are engaged members of their communities give back to their communities, and this day provides an opportunity for students to experience giving back. Community service is an explicit part of our curriculum. Juniors and seniors have capstone projects they do through seminar that center on community service, and this day gives underclassmen some ideas about what they might want to do later on. And finally, we know that colleges want to see high school students do community service.

This year, Community Service Day has an additional purpose: it's one way we are introducing Boston Arts Academy to our new neighborhood and introducing our new neighborhood to BAA. Many of our students will be doing service and meeting with community leaders from Dorchester-area organizations. Here are some examples:

  • BAA students will be working in the food pantry and at the Early Learning Center at Catholic Charities.
  • BAA students will be helping in the preschool at Au Co Viet Aid in Fields Corner.
  • BAA students will be painting a mural at The City Schools in Uphams Corner.
  • BAA students will be helping with preparations for the Martin Richard Foundation One Boston event.
  • BAA students will be working with seniors at Kit Clark Senior Services in Fields Corner.

Other BAA students will be doing service in our immediate community--helping teachers and staff prepare for the relocation. All of these activities will be done by advisory, and that is yet another purpose for the day: an opportunity for advisories to spend some quality time together. Advisors have specific information about what each student is doing; please contact advisors in you have questions about your student's schedule for Wednesday.

I know all of our students will make us proud on Wednesday. Service learning can help students build all sorts of skills: leadership skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills and also self confidence and self awareness. My hope is that students have the opportunity to reflect on the importance of community service and have an experience that helps them see the kind of good they have the individual power to create in their communities.

Have a great Community Service Day, and have a great week!

CONGRATULATIONS AND SHOUT OUTS

Congratulations to Ms. Bonilla, Director of Admissions, for her El Batey Award in recognition of her service, leadership and commitment to education!

Shout out to the entire Junior VA class for finishing and passing the OSHA exam requirement.
