MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

At Boston Arts Academy, we teach our students that we want them to be artists, scholars, and global citizens, and our mission statement talks about students being "engaged members of a democratic society." To that end, we have always had what some might view as an unusual graduation requirement: before they graduate, seniors must either register to vote or they must have a conversation with me about why they choose not to.

For many years, almost all students registered; the only exceptions were for legal status or for religious beliefs. In the last few graduating classes, however, I have noticed what to me is a concerning trend: some students resist registering to vote because they are discouraged by politics and by what they have seen in the world and in their communities. This year's graduating class has seen many close elections and a year of charged political debate. My hope is that this year's graduating class will be a class that is looking forward to voting.

Our students have always had a proud tradition of political activism. At several points in our curriculum, particularly in seminar and in humanities, we support students to research issues they care about and to contact politicians. Our students have always participated in walk outs and marches, including those that happened recently. And I know from my conversations with students that they care very much about a number of issues: climate change, police brutality, immigration rights, education budgets, and so on.

All of these issues are affected by laws, and laws are created by politicians. Advocating is a way to make change. Organizing is a way to make change. But voting is also a way to make change. Being engaged members of a democratic society means demanding that your elected officials are accountable and reflect your priorities and your values. I have a lot of faith in the priorities and values of the class of 2018, and I look forward to the future they will help shape.

Have a great week!

CONGRATULATIONS AND SHOUT OUTS

As a result of the Hum 3 letter writing exercise, 3 students have received replies and invitations to meet with officials in Greater Boston. Shout outs to the following students who are in correspondence with officials:

  • Guenevir Pichardo -- with Juan Pierre, Director of Compliance regarding gender bias and sexual assault in the district.
  • Franklin Pimentel -- with Mike O'Malley, City Council Representative, they met to discuss race relations and promoting relations across groups in West Roxbury
  • Emma Cataloni -- with Brenna Callahan with the Mayor's Office of Women's Advancement regarding her experience(s) as a young woman in Boston.

Shout out to Chavez Singletary who attended the March For Our Lives in Washington, DC last weekend. He really enjoyed the experience and learned that change doesn’t always require a big gesture. Sometimes all it takes is a small action to lead to great change.

Congratulations to Ms. Rivelli, Ms. Hill, Ms. Lee, and the music department for a strong senior Classical Recital last Wednesday. The performances were a demonstration of each student's love of music. There were many different highlights: passion, artistic execution, sensitive interpretation and solid technique, all performed for an appreciative crowd!

Have someone(s) to congratulate or shout out? Please email Ms. Booth --> tbooth@bostonartsacademy.org (be sure to include name and reason for the shout out)
