March 19 - March 23, 2018  |  Week 28

MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

We are about to enter a period of MCAS testing (10th graders are taking the English MCAS March 27-March 29), and I want to congratulate the 10th grade students on their diligence with their preparation. I am particularly proud of the students who have been doing extra Saturday math review sessions. [Students and families: If you are interested in these sessions, please check in with Ms. Mandell or Mr. Flaherty.]

At Boston Arts Academy, as our handbook states, we believe that standardized tests are just one way--often a very limited way--to measure student achievement. There's certainly no MCAS for arts achievement, and I personally hope there never will be. The kinds of skills an arts-based education supports students to develop--creativity, collaboration, critical and imaginative thinking, and communication--aren't well measured on standardized tests. Our performances, exhibitions, portfolio assessments, and benchmarks are much more appropriate assessments of those skills.

That said, we always want our students to be well prepared when they face standardized testing. Students must pass the MCAS to get a diploma in all public schools in Massachusetts. Teachers have made sure that curricula are well aligned to state standards and well paced so students get the content knowledge, and the practice, they need. On the actual days of testing, we will do everything we can as a school community to make sure that testing students are well supported, and we will ask that those students who are not testing support by keeping areas around testing rooms quiet.

10th grade students: We are confident that you will do well. Congratulations again on your hard work. Do your best, and you will see that hard work pay off.

And to everyone: Have a great week!

CONGRATULATIONS AND SHOUT OUTS

Congratulations to Daniela Alarcon-Diaz on her acceptance to Northeastern University, with the Boston Public High School Scholarship - a full scholarship given to only 10 students each year!

Congratulations to Marileidy Tejeda on her acceptance to Wheaton College with a $28,000 scholarship per year!

Shout out to the Senior Theatre Ensemble who presented a piece in the Mass Collab Theatre Festival this weekend. They worked together, supported each other on stage and demonstrated, in their work, that they had truly come to embody the professional skills and habits of theatre artists.

Shout out to Mr. Telemaque, Ms. Valentin, Junior VAs, and the Visual Arts Department for the opening of two coordinating shows, Crossing / Borders, in the first floor Gordon Gallery, and Metamorphosis / Creative Differences, in the second floor student gallery. Each show takes an in-depth look at different artists' perspectives of belonging and identity. Be sure to check them out!

Have someone(s) to congratulate or shout out? Please email Ms. Booth --> tbooth@bostonartsacademy.org (be sure to include name and reason for the shout out)
