Weekly Bulletin

February 4 - February 8, 2019  |  Week 22

MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

In addition to being the first week of Black History Month (please see the first of our featured Black artists below), this week is the first annual Boston Public Schools Career and Technical Education Week. This week was chosen to correspond with national Career and Technical Education Month®, a public awareness campaign that takes place each February to celebrate the value of CTE and the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs across the country. Career and Technical Education programs are programs that meet the definition of vocational technical education contained in Massachusetts General Law Chapter 74 and are approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Boston Arts Academy is proud to showcase our two outstanding Career and Technical Education programs: Fashion Technology and Design and Visual Communications/Visual Art.

Please look for the following this week:

  • The BAA Fashion Technology exhibition opens this Thursday February 7th at 4pm in the school gallery. All are invited!
  • Fashion Videos will be uploaded and featured on "CTE at BAA" portion of website.
  • DVC Animations will be posted on BAA website in the featured "CTE at BAA"  portion of the website.

Artistic training is vocational training. In all of our majors, our students learn valuable, employable skills. Specific to fashion and visual arts, BAA graduates have gone on to be fashion merchandisers, designers, architects, and graphic artists. I'm especially proud that some of those graduates now sit on our advisory boards for Fashion and DVC and help shape current curriculum.

Happy Black History month, happy CTE week, and have a great week!

HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

Do You Know Rosetta Tharpe?

Rock 'n' roll was bred between the church and the nightclubs in the soul of a queer black woman in the 1940s named Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She was there before Elvis, Little Richard and Johnny Cash swiveled their hips and strummed their guitars. It was Tharpe, the godmother of rock 'n' roll, who turned this burgeoning musical style into an international sensation… While Tharpe has historically been overlooked in rock 'n' roll history, she has, in recent years, been rightfully celebrated as a woman who broke every norm, and has a central place in the Turning the Tables canon. She was a gospel singer at heart who became a celebrity by forging a new path musically, a queer woman who toured with her partner and a fearless black artist who was in love with crafting a new sound. Through her unforgettable voice and gospel swing crossover style, Tharpe influenced a generation of musicians including Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry and countless others. Her career, which spanned four decades, was grounded in both her confidence and the characteristic rawness she brought to her performances night after night. She was, and is, an unmatched artist.” Click here to learn more.
