MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

We teach our students at Boston Arts Academy that artists are engaged members of their communities, and we encourage our students to think of themselves as "artist advocates." I wanted to share with the whole Boston Arts Academy community a story of a BAA teacher exemplifying our values and leading by example.

Last year, of the 73 pieces the Boston Symphony Orchestra programmed, only one was not written by a white man. As a composer of color and a music history teacher at BAA, Mr. Ballesteros found this programming to be a deeply inaccurate representation not just of our city but of the world of classical music.

Mr. Ballesteros communicated his concerns to the orchestra, and he also wrote an open letter that he shared with the larger Boston artistic community. The letter was signed by 65 artists by the time it was delivered to the Boston Symphony Orchestra in late October. The orchestra responded in great detail and invited Mr. Ballesteros to bring a group to a meeting. Mr. Ballesteros organized a small, varied group of area musicians, and they started a dialogue in December. Through those meetings, Mr. Ballesteros and the group of artists expressed their concerns and proposed solutions.

As a result of the advocacy led by Mr. Ballesteros, the 2018-19 Boston Symphony Orchestra season looks much different: there will be at least 13 pieces by women and composers of color performed at Symphony Hall by the orchestra, and the conductors include an African-American man, a Korean woman, and a Venezuelan man. I am very proud of Mr. Ballesteros' work and his demonstration of a true "vision with integrity." I hope students will ask him more about his work with the symphony, and even better, be inspired by his efforts.

Have a great week!

CONGRATULATIONS AND SHOUT OUTS

Congratulations to Daniela Alarcon-Diaz, Anthony Carballo-Soto, Angelina Botticelli, and Taylor Correia-Podolske for presenting to School Principals and teachers at the ASCD conference last weekend!

Congratulations to Arianna Rodriguez who was accepted to the LA Philharmonic’s 2018 National Take a Stand Festival Symphony Orchestra. Arianna, along with other young musicians from diverse regions and backgrounds, will become ambassadors of their programs, learning from world-renowned conductors and artist mentors in beautiful settings and concert halls, including Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Congratulations to the Music Department for a risk-taking and varied senior recital program. Music Tech Seniors presented work in various audio modes, with video, live performance and even a demonstration on how to create a multi-layered soundtrack. There was evidence of a lot of collaboration, experimentation and interdisciplinary thinking. Jazz Performance Instrumentalists demonstrated generous musical communication in ensemble and also individually with the audience, and vocalists were passionate in their delivery. We’re looking forward to seeing our Classical Performance Seniors on Wednesday, March 28th at BAA!

Congratulations to Annalise Englert and Sydnie Cooper on their acceptances to Emerson College!

Shout out to Mr. Ballesteros who, along with other composer colleagues, convinced the Boston Symphony Orchestra to diversify its selection of composers to include women composers and composers of color for its 2018-2019 season! In addition, the BSO is now willingly engaged in the inclusion conversation in other areas as well. There's definitely still work to do, but this is a step in the right direction. Great example of advocacy and the power of activism to change minds and move old traditions!

Congratulations to our Billboard Finalist Presenters from Geometry class! First place is awarded to Mariella Murillo and Anya Edwards for their thorough presentation and creative spider-inspired design. Honorable mention is awarded to Thays Figuereido for her unique ballerina design.

Have someone(s) to congratulate or shout out? Please email Ms. Booth --> tbooth@bostonartsacademy.org (be sure to include name and reason for the shout out)
