MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

I am excited that this week opens our spring exhibition and performance season! The fashion exhibition opens Thursday from 4pm-6pm in our second floor gallery. Students will be showcasing second semester work, including designs from scratch and designs they have modified. Please come support our newest major!

Dance Springfest also opens this coming weekend. The shows features choreography by Dance Department Chair William McLaughlin; Tatiana Obeso; (Former Co-Chair) Sheryl Pollard-Thomas; Heather Stewart, Guest Artist Nathan Trice; (BAA founding Artistic Dean and Chair of the Dance Department) Fernadina Chan;  and Boston Arts Academy alumni and former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater member Kirven Douthit-Boyd. There will also be special performance by BAA alumni Stravinsky Bolivar, Demetrius Burns of Ron K. Brown/Evidence, Fedner Dorrelus, Andy Fernandez of  Staatstheater Nürnberg, Tandicka Nurse, Ndubuisi Ofoegbu, Ronnie Thomas, and Seaburn Williams. This performance is designed to explore BAA's past, present and future, as reflected through dance, and it's always a great show!

Investment Club is holding an informal lunch session on strategies for smart money use on Thursday, May 10th in room 209. Anyone can join us for this event. Get tips from adults in the building on how to save and use money the right way. Come with questions, too! If you would like to join us for lunch, let Mr. Bobrow know by Wednesday.

*NEW* A new Health Group called Let’s Talk About It with Ms. Kroesser & Ms. Posig will meet on Thursdays at Lunch in Room 133. Anyone may attend this group. We will discuss any and all topics related to mental health, physical health and sexual health. Please bring your lunch!

BAA Student Government E-Board Self-Nomination. Elections will be held on Friday, May 18th. Please self-nominate yourself by completing this form before Friday, May 11th. Responses will be displayed to the BAA community. The sooner you submit your response, the better chance the student body will get to know you. All positions are for 1 year. The responsibilities for each position will be listed below. *NEW* Ball Up Boston! Join the Mayor’s Youth Council for a youth and police community basketball tournament that includes raffles, food, and more. The Public Health and Safety Committee for the Mayor's Youth Council invites high school youth to come by BCYF Tobin Community Center. Cheer on your classmates as they play friendly games of basketball against Boston Police officers from Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury. Saturday, May 12th, 11am-2pm.

Duck 'n' Hover is a day long engineering design challenge for teenagers taking place on Saturday, May 12th from 8:30am-4:30pm at the Museum of Science, Boston. Click here to sign up to participate in this fun, free event! All participants will receive a free t-shirt and free lunch.

BPS Youth Voices "Creativity Takes Courage" Contest. BPS Youth Voices "Creativity Takes Courage" Contest provides young people an opportunity to create purposeful media to express their ideas for driving change in their community and the world beyond. Winners will be announced in 8 categories. Click here for more information. Deadline: Saturday, May 12th.

Gathering for Tomorrow. Increasing college access and professional imagination for students of color. Friday, May 18th, 9am-4pm @ Emerson College. Event includes college admissions training, a professional innovator panel, a college fair, and a drawing for a $4,000 scholarship toward tuition at a Boston area college. All current students of color at Boston public/charter high schools can apply. Up tp 60 students will be accepted. This program is free to participants, with breakfast and lunch provided. Apply online by Sunday, May 13th or email Harrison Blum (harrison_blum@emerson.edu) for more information.

Though you must be 18 years old to vote, 16 and 17 year olds can pre-register to vote. For students who are interested in pre-registering, a registration table will be set up in the main lobby during lunch on Monday, May 14th. Once pre-registered, you will receive a pre-registration notice by mail, confirming receipt of your application. Once you become old enough to vote, your local election will mail you an acknowledgement notice, which is confirmation that your name has been moved from the list of pre-registrants to the list of registered voters. Your acknowledgement notice will include your party affiliation and the location of your polling place.

*NEW* Met Gala. Come share a night of fun and high fashion at Prom 2018! Friday, June 8th, 7-11pm, Holiday Inn - Brookline. Prom tickets are now on sale in the main office! Tickets are $65 and can be paid by cash, check, money order, or credit card. Please see Ms. Gomez.

Prom 2018 Guidelines, Contingency, and Expectations

Guidelines. BAA prom attendees must be juniors or seniors. Sophomores are allowed to attend only if invited by an upperclassman. BAA juniors and seniors may invite outside guests. All outside guests must complete and submit a permission slip by 1pm on Friday, May 18th (permission slips can be picked up in the main office). Approved guests will be posted in the main office one week before the prom. If your guest is not on the approved list, they cannot attend. No exceptions.

Contingency. In the event that a sophomore, junior, or senior is found not to be in compliance or is in violation of the school's Community Standards or the BPS Code of Conduct that results in a disciplinary action, not limited to a suspension, such student will not be allowed to participate and/or attend BAA's prom that year and will be refunded their money.

Expectations. All students attending Prom are expected to adhere to the BPS Code of Conduct. Inappropriate attire at Prom will result in no entry. Students who do not adhere to the BPS code of conduct will be removed from the prom.

*NEW* Mr. Joy: The Neighborhood Tour, May 5th - 19th. ArtsEmerson presents the 2nd annual Mr. Joy: The Neighborhood Tour, a series of free theatre performances of Daniel Beaty’s Mr. Joy, a play that explores issues of race and class in America to help us find our common humanity. Directed by David Dower and performed by Adobuere Ebiama, performances start May 5 in Charlestown at Bunker Hill Community College before traveling to Scituate High School, Roxbury Community College, and Allston. Tickets to all performances on the tour are free; however, due to limited space, advance reservations are strongly encouraged. Click here to reserve tickets.

MetroHacks is the biggest high school hackathon, or tech gathering and competition, in New England. Students will have the chance to learn 3D printing, construct virtual realities, design artificial intelligence-driven social media platforms, experiment with their own projects, and learn from leaders in the tech industry. High school students ages 13-18 can come, regardless of experience. It will be held at the Harvard Student Organization Center at Hilles in Cambridge, MA, on Saturday, May 19th - Sunday, May 20th. The event is completely free, and meals are provided for all participants.

*NEW* Vote Fest. A celebration of youth voice, activism and democracy! The Mayor's Youth Council, Youth Lead the Change, Civic Engagement, and Workforce and Economic Development Committees invite local youth to Vote Fest. The event features Youth Lead the Change voting, voter pre-registration, performances, raffles, and free food. Thursday, May 24th, 4-8pm at the BCYF Tobin Community Center.

*NEW* Make your voice heard! Arts Connect International is forming a Youth Arts Leadership Council (YALC), a year-long paid position for rising Juniors and Seniors at Boston Arts Academy. YALC will focus on amplifying youth voices on arts and equity, creating channels for advocacy and action. As a YALC member, you'll also hold a key role in co-creating a culminating Arts Equity Summit in March 2019. Apply today! Applications can be found online at bit.ly/aciyalc, and paper applications can be found in the BAA main office. Applications are due by Sunday, May 27th.

Seniors: Please know that we accept Senior Dues anytime throughout the school year. Senior dues cover a portion of graduation, cap & gown, and the yearbook. You may bring cash or a check, made payable to Boston Arts Academy, to Ms. Gomez in the main office. Senior Dues are $120.

Beautiful Me Girls Conference. Friday, June 9th and Saturday, June 10th at Cambridge College (500 Rutherford Ave., Boston). The mission of this conference is to To EMPOWER Black girls to connect their identity with history, to EMBRACE and foster positive relationships with other Black girls, and to EXALT the skin they’re in. This conference will encourage unity, self-confidence, and a broader awareness of the power of media and the harmful messages that may affect their self-image and self-esteem so that she will create a life by design, not by default. *NEW* ICA Teens Film School. ICA Teens Film School is a one week intensive workshop for aspiring young filmmakers with an interest in storytelling who are excited to experience all aspects of movie making, including directing, camera, and editing. In this collaborative workshop, students will be split into production companies and will have a chance to play all roles in the creation of original short films. Full scholarships available for Boston Public School students. Fee: $360 non-members; $285 members

COLLEGE AND CAREER

*NEW* All Grade Levels: Boston PIC representatives will be visiting BAA this Thursday during lunch to connect students to local summer jobs.

*NEW* West Roxbury Art Association (WRAA) Scholarship | Amount: $1,000 | Deadline: May 22nd.

WRAA welcomes all High School Seniors who are continuing their education in the Arts to apply for their Annual Janet Murphy Art Scholarship for $1,000.00. Applicants must be a resident of West Roxbury or Roslindale. Artist will need to complete an artist statement (at least 100 words), a letter of recommendation from a current or past art instructor, and have a portfolio of 5-10 pieces. Completed portfolios can be emailed to crmot19@gmail.com or mailed/dropped off at Picture This Framing (2093 Centre St., West Roxbury). In your application email, please include your name, address, school, & contact information. Portfolio reviews will be scheduled in late May 2018.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Massachusetts Scholarship | Amount: $300-$500 | Deadline: Sunday, June 1st. The purpose of  the Saint Vincent and  the Grenadines Association of Massachusetts, Inc. is to promote education and cultural awareness among the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in Massachusetts. SVGA of Mass. Inc. is offering three scholarships for its Annual Scholarship Awards and is currently accepting applications from College bound students who are:

a) St. Vincent and the Grenadines nationals or of Vincentian parentage

b) A Non-Vincentian

Ms. LoBrutto will be holding drop-in hours in the Alaska Lab every Wednesday from 3-5pm and Friday 1-3pm. She is available to talk to all grade levels about career and major exploration, standardized testing, the Common App, college essays, financial aid, and scholarships.

Family Council meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of every month for the remainder of the school year. Please note that while spring meetings are currently scheduled to be held at BAA, the location is subject to change based on the Red Sox game schedule. Seasonal allergy tips. If you know your child has severe seasonal allergies and needs to take medication, please try to give it to them at home to avoid worsening of symptoms at school.Seasonal allergy symptoms can include red/itchy eyes, watering of eyes, eye swelling, sore throat, runny noses, and sneezing.  There are many over the counter medications that can help with Symptoms . The doctor can help you with a good medication option. Oftentimes, a doctor may also recommend using allergy relief eye drops to help with eye itching/irritation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the nurse's office!
