Weekly Bulletin

April 23 - April 27, 2018  |  Week 32

MESSAGE FROM BAA HEADMASTER, MS. CLARK

Welcome back from April Vacation! There are three important things happening this week.

First, Wednesday is Family Conference Day. At Boston Arts Academy, we believe that families are important partners in students' success, and we appreciate the time and effort families expend in so many ways. Thank you, in advance, to family members who will attend Family Conferences this week. If you do not yet have an appointment, please reach out to your student's advisor.

Second, Thursday is College Visit Day. I am extraordinarily proud of the hard work and resulting success of the class of 2018, many of whom have been admitted to multiple colleges, some with substantial scholarship awards. That hard work began freshman year with college visits. We are dedicating a day to college visits because we want students to understand the options available and the choices that they will have the opportunity to make: large or small, arts-focused or not, local or further away. We want students to understand how what they do in high school connects to college: what colleges require in the admissions process and how students can best set themselves up for success. Finally, we want students to begin to understand, before they are making choices in their senior year, the structure of tuition, financial aid, and scholarships. 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students, the college you visit this week may not be one you ultimately consider. But my hope is that you will take the opportunity to think about the college process in general, where you may want to go after BAA and what you need to do to get there.

Finally, school climate surveys are being rolled out this week. The Boston Public Schools, as a system, is implementing a new evaluation system for schools and they want every member or our community--teachers, students, families--to participate. The student surveys will be passed out in advisory; the family surveys will be coming through emails and will be available at our family conferences. We are proud of what we do at Boston Arts Academy, but we also teach that we all grow through critique. We hope you will participate in these surveys and tell the district what kind of school you think BAA is.

Have a great week!

CONGRATULATIONS AND SHOUT OUTS

Shout out to Joaniris Baez, freshman visual artist, who recently spoke at the Trinity Boston Foundation’s Bostonians for Youth gala. According to one of the attendees: “She shared her story with images of her artwork in the background, and then stirred the room with a call to action on a few social justice issues about which she is passionate. She stood as a giant among men.”

Shout out to Samil Battenfeld, who is appearing in Wheelock Family Theatre's Stuart Little (Ensemble, Understudy Stuart).

Congratulations to Mr. Flaherty and Mr. Sullivan who were awarded a grant that will allow them to travel to Japan to film a documentary on Tetsuya Miyamoto, inventor of the KenKen logic puzzle. Their finished documentary will be used to document for fellow educators the concepts of lesson structures and cognitive load.

Shout out to Ms. Miranda who co-presented at a national sign language interpreting conference last week. She presented on: Sign Language Interpreters and Restorative Conversation, and Race, Access, and the Transactional Model of Interpreting.

Have someone(s) to congratulate or shout out? Please email Ms. Booth --> tbooth@bostonartsacademy.org (be sure to include name and reason for the shout out)
